But there are also many tales of poignant tragedy – some of which are made more palatable only by the passing of time.

One such example is the tragic story of the Irish Wynne family’s association with the National.

The first ever Irish-trained winner of the Grand National was the 9-year-old horse Matthew, ridden by Dennis “Denny” Wynne in 1847 – a 10-1 winner, prepared for the race by John Murphy at The Curragh, for County Cork-based owner John Courtenay.

Fifteen years later, Denny’s son Joseph was down to ride the horse O’ Connell in the 1862 Grand National, but on the morning of the race the Wynne family received tragic news; Joe’s sister had died suddenly at home in Ireland.

O’Connell’s owner, Lord De Freyne, did his utmost to persuade jockey Joe not to ride, but he was determined to take part to honour his sister and the family’s association with the great race and the horse racing tips suggested he could even win.

Tragedy was to strike. At the plain fence before the water, O’Connell was brought down, in full view of the grandstand to the shock of the thousands of spectators. Those looking at the Grand National 2011 betting will hope this year’s race will pass off without such a dramatic incident.

The fence, which was always taken at great speed was later changed to an open ditch partly as a result of the tragedy. It later came to be known as “The Chair” due to its proximity to the distance judge’s seat.

As a result of his fall, Joe Wynne received internal injuries and was taken unconscious to the nearby Sefton Arms Inn where he died just five hours later, tragically following in the footsteps of his father Denny who had also died in a fall in 1858.

Of the many jockeys whose name was made almost solely by his association with the Grand National is Brian Fletcher.

In 1968, the 19-year old Geordie won the National on 100-7 priced Red Alligator trained by Denys Smith and carrying a lowly 10 stones. It was Brian’s second ride in the race. The previous year, he had finished third on the same horse in the 1967 race made famous by the mass pile-up at the 23rd fence and eventual victory by 100-1 outsider Foinavon.

Brian expertly piloted the nine year-old Red Alligator winning the 68 National by 20 lengths from Moidore’s Token and actor Gregory Peck-owned horse Different Class.

Unfortunately, Brian failed to get round in his next three Grand Nationals – though the best was yet to come.

But in February 1972, the young jockey suffered a crashing fall at Stockton Racecourse and was unconscious for 10 days.

After making a determined return to racing later that year, Fletcher was asked by Donald McCain to partner Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.

The rest, as they say, is history. Brian Fletcher and Red Rum carrying 10 stones 5 pounds caught Crisp on the line in the 1973 Grand National – one of the most memorable in the race’s rich history (setting a time record that has only been beaten once since then, in 1990 by Mr Frisk on very firm going).

The following year in 1974, the horse again guided by Brian Fletcher, went on to retain his National title – but this time carrying a remarkable 12 stones, a feat that upset the Grand National betting odds as that’s a huge weight to carry. And a year later, Brian again rode Red Rum, finishing a close second when giving weight to two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner L’Escargot.

Brian then lost the ride on “Rummy” to Tommy Stack for the 1976 Grand National – but still managed to finish third on Eyecatcher, just behind his former mount who was a close second to Rag Trade and those who followed the horse racing odds would have been impressed by his efforts.

Apart from Ernie Piggott, Lester Piggott’s grandfather, Brian Fletcher is the only person to have ridden three Grand National winners since the turn of the 20th century – though one George Stevens rode five National winners between 1856 and 1870.

Last year the public were offered this opportunity for a week, but now with even more courses opening their gates and turnstiles for free the scheme has been extended to a month. The hope is that it will broaden and extend the scope and appeal of the sport and let people experience the thrill of live racing for nothing, as well as getting to see some top class horses like Paul Nicholls Denman.

Racing For Change, the Racecourse Association and lovetheraces.com have all combined their resources to bring this unique opportunity to fruition. The aim is to make it bigger and better than last year, when only nine tracks were featured, but even then 40,000 additional visitors were generated, many of those visiting for the first time or going back to the races after a long absence.

This year sees not only a spread in the time span of the scheme but also a better geographical spread as well as afternoon and evening opportunities to go racing. Both flat and National Hunt cards are included in the scheme which takes in Spring Bank Holidays and the public holiday for the Royal Wedding on April 29th, if you want to go racing that day then Doncaster is the place to be with the course having already taken 14,000 bookings.

Many of last year’s courses have returned once again to take part in the initiative with Epsom, Newbury, Newmarket and Sandown joining the party this year. The idea behind the scheme is to get people either going racing or returning to the races in addition to rewarding regular supporters of the courses involved with a free days racing and those who read the Paul Nicholls Betfair column may have heard about it already.

There are some quality days racing included in the month, with the opening day of the Newmarket Craven meeting and the Sunday of the Bet365 Gold Cup Easter Festival taking pride of place.

There were no major surprises amongst the absentees, Colin Tizzard’s Cue Card being the highest profile of those that will not take their chance, but it had already been made clear some time ago that last year’s Festival Bumper winner will bid to land the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle this time around and the Cheltenham Festival betting reflected this.

Reigning champion Binocular heads the list of acceptors as he bids to give trainer Nicky Henderson his sixth Champion Hurdle following the three won by See You Then in the 1980′s and the surprise win of Binocular’s stable companion Punjabi in 2009. Also still in the race representing the Seven Barrows handler is Welsh Champion hurdle winner Oscar Whisky.

Ireland’s big hope Hurricane Fly remains a contender along with fellow Irish raiders Dunguib and Thousand Stars, whilst apart from Binocular a strong home contingent also includes the high-class pair of Menorah and Peddlers Cross, both winners of big novice hurdles at the fixture 12 months ago. Last year’s Champion Hurdle runner-up Khyber Kim is also amongst the intended runners, Nigel Twiston-Davies having declined the opportunity of running his charge in the World Hurdle, Alan King will saddle Mille Chief and Salden Licht, whilst the field is likely to be made up by Overturn, Clerk’s Choice and Bygones of Brid, in what promises to be a thrilling renewal of the hurdles blue riband event.

Binocular remains the 10/3 ante-post favourite, Menorah is in to 9/2, Hurricane Fly is a 5/1 shot, and Peddlers Cross can be backed at 6/1.

Meanwhile, the Cheltenham Gold Cup odds suggest we should be in for a very interesting renewal of the race.

Past winners Denman, Kauto Star and Imperial Commander are all among the favourites and will be looking to add to their tally of victories.

Philip Fenton’s stable star lined up as odds on favourite for the opening Supreme Novice hurdle and he was considered to be the banker of the Festival for so many punters. However, things did not go to plan and after a rather average display of jumping he could only finish third, much to the delight of bookmakers who were able to hang on to the cash staked by overenthusiastic punters who thought they were essentially buying money.

Although Dunguib’s connections were disappointed with the geldings defeat, the subsequent form of that race has shown that there was no disgrace. Menorah who won that day has shown himself to be a high-class hurdler as he has won both his starts this season and he is now a very strong contender for Champion Hurdle honours. The horse will no doubt attract plenty of Cheltenham 2011 bets .

Despite this, it should not be forgotten that Dunguib is a proven Cheltenham winner, his victory in the 2009 Champion Bumper remains one of the most impressive performances ever seen at Festival and the Cheltenham racing betting suggests he is in with a chance of tasting victory again this time around.

If he can put together a fluent round of jumping in the Champion Hurdle there is no doubt that he has the engine to play a massive role in the finish.

Cumbria-based trainer Nicky Richards has high hopes that his Premier Sagas will put up a bold show in the two-and-a-half mile contest, and is thankful for having had second thoughts about running his charge at Kelso in mid-February. He had been in two minds as to whether or not to let the progressive seven-year-old take his chance at the Borders track, but in hindsight without the win achieved there and the resultant 10lb rise in the weights, he would almost certainly have missed the cut for next Tuesday’s contest.

Now, off a rating of 139 and set to carry 11st 11lbs, the David Yates-owned gelding will certainly have a place in the line-up and is set to be partnered by Dougie Costello, who took over the schooling of the horse on Monday following the injury sustained by Premier Sagas’ intended rider Brian Harding at the weekend which ruled him out of action at Cheltenham races .

The schooling session went well and Richards reports his contender in good form. The son of Sagacity has really come into his own since the turn of the year, running a solid race at Ayr at the start of January to be a close second to Sagalyrique before returning to the Scottish track four weeks later to beat the fair sort Benny Be Good by over four-lengths. His recent Kelso success was his most impressive performance yet, beating Alfie Flits by 22-lengths.

Premier Sagas can currently be backed at up to 16/1 for the Centenary Novices Chase behind Ferdy Murphy’s Divers, the 10/1 ante-post favourite.

Not many of them ride over the obstacles and the usual contenders are seen in the Champion Bumper but one of the most famous jockeys of all time – Lester Piggott got his career underway at Cheltenham a long time before any of his 11 Flat championships. Incidentally, Lester’s father Keith won the Champion Hurdle on African Sister in 1939 and Lester emulated his father with a Festival winner when winning on Mull Sack in 1954. That appeared to signal that Lester’s future would be over fences and hurdles but the “Long Fellow” got his weight under control and the rest is history.

More recently three well-known Irish jockeys have plied their trade at the Festival – Jamie Spencer who has been champion on both sides of the Irish Sea won the Champion Bumper on Pizarro in 2002. The race was a controversial one with a lengthy stewards’ inquiry taking place after Pizarro had hung sharply into Rhinestone Cowboy – but ultimately Spencer was allowed to keep the race and was credited with a Festival winner.

Johnny Murtagh the four time Irish champion rode over hurdles in 2006, taking the ride on Golden Cross in the World Hurdle, once again the finish was somewhat controversial and Murtagh and Golden Cross went under by a short head. Those who bet on Cheltenham racing will know just how seriously Flat jockeys take the Festival.

Pat Smullen has also been a regular feature in the Festival bumper, but so far he has yet to trouble the judge despite having had three good rides for Dermot Weld and the closest he has come is a third on Rite Of Passage the favourite in the 2009 bumper.

Just another dimension to look for in the Cheltenham Festival 2011 betting predictions and an indication of how highly a Cheltenham winner is prized even by those who usually ply their trade under racing’s other code.

John Quinn’s five-year-old put up a tremendous performance for a first-season novice to get the better of fellow northern challenger Bothy in a thrilling finish to the re-scheduled feature Newbury handicap. Having returned home to his Malton yard safe and sound and come out of the race in great form, Quinn has given the green light for the former decent Simon Callaghan-trained middle-distance performer to take his chance in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, a race for which he is now quoted at a best priced 10/1 in the ante-post market.

Quinn observed that his horse should be suited by the normally frenetic pace of the championship contest as he is blessed with plenty of tactical speed and has already shown he is more than capable of handling himself against his own generation. The Rock of Gibraltar gelding has taken really well to hurdling, winning on debut at Carlisle before running a good second at Ascot in October. He resumed winning ways when stepping up to two-and-a-half miles in heavy ground at Lingfield the following month, before winning a ‘jumpers bumper at Southwell, a race that clearly put him spot on for the Grade 3 Totesport Trophy over the minimum trip, in which he showed tremendous guts and determination to see off Bothy by a short-head, with talented performers Notus de la Tour, The Betchworth Kid, Soldatino, and Eradicate following them home.

Quinn noted that soft ground is not essential for Recession Proof to show his best form, indeed most of his wins on the Flat came on ‘good’ ground, so he should not be inconvenienced either way at the Cheltenham Gold Cup 2011.

Hannon reports that the four-year-old has wintered very well indeed and has come back into training looking “bigger and better” with hopes very high that he can confirm his status as one of the best milers in the world. A winner at Royal Ascot as a juvenile when running away with the Coventry Stakes, the Tagula colt proved to be a real star for connections in 2010 when putting up a series of stunning performances having initially appeared a shade disappointing when beaten by stable companion Dick Turpin in the Greenham Stakes, before finishing third to Makfi in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

From the end of May last year Canford Cliffs really blossomed, winning the Irish 2000 Guineas by three-lengths from Free Judgement, before gaining his revenge on Dick Turpin and defeating a high-class field in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. At the end of July he stepped up for the first time to tackle older horses (under regular pilot Richard Hughes), and famously got the better of a tremendous dual with the outstanding Rip Van Winkle, beating the Ballydoyle horse by a neck in cheeky fashion to land the prestigious Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Plans to go to the Breeders’ Cup or race in the Far East at the end of the year, were shelved to concentrate on having him 100% for this season and anyone looking to bet on horse racing should remember how fresh he should be.

Hannon indicated that Canford Cliffs will make his debut at Newbury in mid-May in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes before heading back to Royal Ascot to try and gain revenge on Goldikova for the defeat of his stable companion, the now retired Paco Boy, in last year’s Queen Anne Stakes.

Over the past fortnight it has been Nicholls’ championship rival Nicky Henderson who has been hogging the headlines, sending out the 1-2 in the King George VI Chase on a day when he landed a five-timer at Kempton, having four winners last Saturday including Champion hurdle hopes Binocular and Oscar Whisky, then racking up his fastest ever 100 with a winner at Market Rasen earlier this week. Of course, all eyes will be on Paul Nicholls Kauto Star in a few weeks time, but the trainer will be looking to make a splash sooner than that.

Nicholls can redress the balance somewhat on Saturday as his Woolcombe Folly appears to have an outstanding opportunity to win a good prize before bidding for the Queen Mother Champion Chase (alongside stable companion Master Minded), when he bids for the Grade 2 Totepool Games Spirit Chase, for which he is an expected odds-on favourite. A tremendously impressive winner of his two starts so far this term at Ascot and Cheltenham, the eight-year-old has risen 27lbs in the weights to a career-high rating of 169 and should dispose of the opposition, as long as the ground doesn’t come up soft.

Half an hour earlier, Nicholls’ high-class What A Friend, twice a winner in Grade 1 company last season, will bid to improve on his fifth spot behind Imperial Commander in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November when he attempts to lower the colours of Henderson’s ‘King George’ runner-up Riverside Theatre, in what promises to be the race of the day. That battle between the horses trained by the two handlers bidding for the championship, will doubtless be seen as a sign of the whole season in microcosm.

The Festival uses all of Cheltenham’s courses. The Old Course stages racing on the first two days of the meeting, with the New Course taking over for days three and four and anyone interesting in horse racing betting should probably learn the difference between the two.

Let’s take a look at the Old Course first – races on this course really start in earnest at the top of the hill (after the final ditch, four out) and the third last, in particular, can catch out horses who find themselves gathering momentum and travelling at a slightly quicker pace than they feel comfortable with as they hurtle down the hill before turning for home and facing the daunting climb up the Cheltenham Hill.

The Old Course has been modified since last year’s Festival and now has two fences in the home straight. After the 2010 Festival, the penultimate fence was moved 239 yards from the bottom of the hill, round the bend on to the finish straight, as previously the fence came at the bottom of a short downhill gradient and the momentum which horses carried into the fence produced a characteristic fall where horses took off too early and the jockey got fired into the turf on the landing side. Despite the change of position for the fence it has still caused some grief at the Cheltenham meetings this season and we wait to see what will happen at the Cheltenham Festival 2011 when the horses fire off the bend and approach the fence at real speed.

The Old Course stages just one of the three Grade One Chase events, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with the other two being run over the New Course.

A new Cheltenham Gold Cup is minted each year; there are 10 ounces of gold in the trophy, which makes it worth around £8,500.

There are 10 miles of running rail on the racecourse with 165 hurdles and 24 fences – measuring a quarter-mile long if they were all joined together.

Well over 200,000 spectators attend the four days of The Festival. With ticket prices ranging from £20 to £80, the estimated gate receipts total around £7m.

The Festival also accounts for around 10 per cent of the Tote’s annual on-course pool betting turnover, while at least £1 million pounds changes hands on every race in the betting ring at the racecourse, with over 250 bookmakers in attendance for each day of The Festival.

220,000 pints of Ireland’s national drink, Guinness are consumed over the four days of the Festival, so clearly those who don’t win on the horse racing betting can still afford to drown their sorrows.

Prize money at the Festival is almost £3.4m, an amazing average of around £125,000 per race. Around half of that total comes from the race sponsors.

The racecourse employs over 60 permanent staff, which rises to approximately 1,000 for a race meeting and over 5,000 at the Festival.

The Cheltenham Festival is a massively important betting event, and one that can fundamentally affect the annual profits of bookmakers with huge amounts gambled on each race and a glut of favourites can spell disaster for the bookmakers.

There are up to 650 helicopter landings at the course during the meeting, making it the busiest temporary airfield anywhere in the country – and that includes Silverstone on British Grand Prix day.

In 2008 day two of the Festival was cancelled due to high winds with all Wednesday races moved to Thursday and Friday resulting in two marathon cards which are unlikely to be repeated at the Festival.

It’s certainly not unheard of for a great National Hunt trainer to switch even more successfully to Flat racing. In the 1960′s that is just what Vincent O’Brien did having won virtually everything going over jumps including three Grand Nationals, three Cheltenham Gold Cups and a famous Champion Hurdle hat-trick with Hatton’s Grace 1949-51. O’Brien went on to win just about every top class Flat race going and dominated European racing through until the late 1980s.

Well, Nicholls doesn’t appear to have quite such grandiose plans, indeed the main reason for him applying for the dual purpose license is so that his daughter Megan, (who will be 16 in a couple of years time), can ride on the Flat for her father, so those involved in horse race betting shouldn’t get too excited. Nicholls suggested that for the forthcoming Flat season he might have very few runners, but nominated the Royal Ascot Racing Cub’s Advisor as being potentially his first runner, with a possible bid for the Chester Cup in May on the cards and it will be interesting to see what chance she is given in the horse racing betting odds.

A number of National Hunt trainers have consistently done well with a selected number of runners in recent years. Nicholls’ arch rival Nicky Henderson being a case in point, having enjoyed winners at Royal Ascot as well as having landed the Cesarewitch. David Pipe and Philip Hobbs have also tasted Flat racing glory, so clearly Nicholls doesn’t want to exclude himself from a taste of the action.

And many of the early clues for Cheltenham success we presented to us at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The most notable of the four winners at Leopardstown that will be looking for Cheltenham glory was perhaps Hurricane Fly. The Willie Mullins-trained horse put in a sharp performance to claim victory in a competitive Irish Champion Hurdle.

That resulted in some horse betting firms cutting his odds into 7/2, just behind Binocular in the Champion Hurdle ante-post betting market.

Day Of A Lifetime also put in a good shift and may well offer some good value at 20/1 for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle whilst Realt Dubh and Noble Prince were involved in a tight battle in the Irish Arkle with the former just claiming victory. The horses were immediately cut by the bookmakers for the Cheltenham equivalent and also the Jewson Novices’ Chase.

The final horse of the quartet of winners from Leopardstown that caught the eye was Hidden Cyclone. The Shark Hanlon-trained horse is now just 12/1 for victory in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle but ante-post backers should be aware the trainer feels the horse may not go to the Festival.

I’m sure we will see our usual number of Irish winners at the Cheltenham Festival this year and many shrewd backers will be cautiously looking to the Leopardstown winners for some extra value in the ante-post betting.

Baker has come a long way in less than three years since he took out a training license having enjoyed previous careers as a stock market trader in the City of London, and as a journalist for the late, lamented The Sportsman newspaper. He established his original base at Moreton Morrell in Warwickshire, from where he managed to rack up more than 100 winners under both codes, before lack of space and the promise of support from notable owners persuaded him to take over the lease at Whitsbury from Ralph Beckett, who has made the move east to Newmarket.

Whitsbury has been home to many outstanding trainers over the years and Beckett certainly enjoyed considerable success there, having taken over the property from David Elsworth, who campaigned the mighty Desert Orchid throughout his legendary chasing career from the Hampshire yard, as well as winning with many classy flat types including In The Groove and Seattle Rhyme.

Baker will have around 80 horses on his books and with the first winner of the new era on the board at only the fourth time of asking, the future is looking increasingly bright for a trainer who has surprised many skeptics by proving particularly adept at placing his horses to advantage in the lower grades. Those who enjoy horse racing betting have started to mark him out as a trainer to follow.

Baker is hoping that better quality horses will now be coming his way as he looks to climb the training ladder, and judging by the quick start made from his new premises another successful season looks very much on the cards.

The centerpiece of that first Festival was of course the four-mile National Hunt Steeplechase, which had prize money of £815 and was won by Sir Halbert, a 33/1 chance in the Cheltenham racing betting. That race was run on the first day and was supported on the second day by a three-and-a-quarter mile race also called confusingly the National Hunt Steeplechase – it is this race that is considered to be the forerunner of the modern day Gold Cup. Worth £832 to the winner it was run in terrible conditions before being won by Autocar at odds of 100/6.

Last seen when running very respectably to finish third to Zaynar in the 2009 Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham, Shalone had been a pretty hot prospect and was being spoken of as a serious Cheltenham Festival contender only to suffer a leg injury that required firing, an operation that necessitated a spell on the ‘easy list’. King reports that the now seven-year-old gelding has come out of the operation in fine shape, and after a spell away at Adrian Wintle’s yard came back into training a couple of months ago and has been progressing nicely, news all horse racing fans will be pleased to hear.

A winner of two of his three bumper races (he was a short-head on the other by subsequent Hennessy Gold Cup winner Diamond Harry), the son of Flemensfirth won his first two starts over hurdles, on the second getting the better of the useful odds-on Tataniano , and in the process confirming himself a horse of considerable ability. His run in the ‘Relkeel’ backed up that impression and offers hope to his connections that he might pick up where he left off and the horse racing odds suggest he could land a big race soon.

King suggests that Shalone has come to hand fairly quickly but still believes that whatever he does at Ascot he will still be better for the outing. Some indication of the regard in which Shalone is held by the team at Jackdaws Castle is the entry he has been given in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on March 17. Nicky Richards’ tremendously talented grey had been given very little hope of survival from an injury for which there is normally no cure, but after fighting tigerishly since the turn of the year and following the decision to reduce his medication to see if his body could fight the disease of its own accord, Monet’s Garden has begun to improve and has been led out of his box in recent days for a breath of fresh air.

Owner David Yates had refused to give up on his beloved horse, having some time ago accepted that the multiple Grade 1 winner would never race again, but he has been determined to give the gelding every possible chance to get through his illness and make it to a long and happy retirement out at grass, despite veterinary advice that he should have been put down a few weeks ago.

Now eating up well and looking to be in good spirits, hopes are tentatively beginning to rise that Richards’ long-time stable star can stave off the Grim Reaper and win the biggest battle of his life. Everyone involved in horse race betting will be pleased to see the gelding doing so well.

The public reaction to the news of Monet’s Garden’s illness has been extraordinary with the Cumbrian-based trainer being inundated with messages of support and racing forums overflowing with the horse’s fans spurring him on to win this last great fight. So far, he’s giving as good as he gets.

The first ever point to point race was run in Ireland, in the eighteenth century. The first recorded, written reference to the practice was in an edition of a magazine known as The Sporting Magazine from 1793, although it is strongly believed that the races had been occurring since the 1750s.

In the beginning, point to point racing and the steeplechase were the same thing. The name ‘steeplechase’ arose from the circumstances in which the first races were carried out. It is thought that the races began very informally, as a way for hunters to exercise their horses. Hunters would race their horses over the countryside to distant church steeples, which provided prominent finishing points, jumping whatever ditches or hedged were in the way.

In the 19th century, point to point racing, or the steeplechase, became more popular and prepared tracks were created for racing on. The tracks used fences and water ditches to simulate the countryside conditions of the original races. Today, the best known steeplechase is the Grand National. Although for many people, the term ‘point to point’ continues to be synonymous with the steeplechase, a genuine point to point race is not technically conducted on a track, whereas a steeplechase is.

Today the rules for point to point racing are strict, with set numbers of fences and horses of the appropriate age required.

As a child, horse slaughter was simply a fact. Now, it’s almost a necessity. I don’t agree with slaughtering horses, nor do I want any horse to end up at a slaughterhouse, but our society produces far too many unwanted horses.

I receive emails on a weekly basis from several different horse industry and horse welfare news streams. Every time I read one of these legislative “updates”, I wonder: When is horse slaughter legislation going to start with the cause of unwanted horses?

Though anti horse slaughter groups have successfully shut down horse slaughterhouses in America, horse breeding has only increased. If horses at auction don’t wind up at slaughter, where are all the “unwanted” horses going to go? As with the millions of unwanted dogs and cats who are euthanized every year, it would be nice if we could say unwanted horses are “humanely destroyed.” But, horses are just not that easy to put down. Besides being big, difficult to transport, to house, and to feed, horses cost several hundred dollars to put down. For “humane” treatment, horses need not only feed, water, and vaccinations, but also farrier care and often special nutritional, veterinary, and stabling.

When is horse slaughter legislation going to start with the cause of unwanted horses?

Horses end up at auction if they can’t be sold privately, can’t be cared for, or are (simply) unwanted. If a horse owner sends an “unwanted” horse to auction and the horse doesn’t sell, what happens to the horse? If the previous owner can’t or won’t care for the horse, who will?

It’s the same with the overpopulation of dogs and cats. It’s better to have a humane society take an unwanted pet and euthanize it than have a pet return to a home where it isn’t wanted or cannot be cared for. But again, horses are extremely difficult and expensive to care for. Some say re-homing unwanted horses is not a big deal since the total number of American horses slaughtered per year “only” equals about 1% of the total American horse population. Based on current horse populations (about 9 million in the US), 90,000 “homeless” horses is still a lot of horses. With hay prices up, gas prices up, and affordable land becoming more scarce, most horse people in any part of the country will tell you; “you can’t even give ‘em away these days.”

Some anti-slaughter activists like to claim horse “kill buyers” are outbidding nice families in search of a pet. Really? If a “nice family” is only willing to spend $100, maybe a $150 on a horse, will they be willing to spent another $150 on vaccines once the vet comes out? What about hoof care every six weeks? Hay, grain, shavings? Proper fencing? Does the nice family have money set aside for emergency transport and thousands of dollars worth of colic surgery? Kill buyers, yes, may be out bidding families (occasionally), but this does not mean the family has means to care for the long term health of the horse.

To minimize horse slaughter and unwanted horses, we need a better plan.

Currently, there are no horse slaughterhouses operating in the United States. Despite anti-slaughter group efforts, American horse slaughterhouses have been successfully shut down, but now horses are just sent over the border to Mexico and Canada where the treatment and killing of animals is even less humane than under American standards.

In many ways, the U.S. slaughter ban has already hurt horse welfare.

For reference, American slaughterhouses used retractable pneumatic bolts to render horses unconscious (in theory) before slitting their throats. However, in Mexico, it’s common practice to stab horses in the back repeatedly until their spinal cord is severed.

In many ways, the U.S. horse slaughter ban has already hurt horse welfare. Now, anti-slaughter groups are attempting to ban horses exported for slaughter altogether. Despite the fact this new law could be easily circumvented by horse “kill dealers” simply labeling horses transported across the border as “for riding” instead of “for slaughter”, we need to first think about minimizing the unwanted horse population before tackling the issue of horse slaughter.

Lets look at some facts:

- According to the USDA, 45,000 horses went to slaughter in Mexico in 2007, and another 26,000 went to Canada (total, 71,000+).

- According to the Jockey Club, 56,000 Thoroughbred mares were bred in 2007.

- According to the Thoroughbred Times, Thoroughbred race horses averaged 25 starts per life in 1950; by 1994, the average Thoroughbred ran just 14 races.

What does this mean? More Thoroughbreds running less races equals more waste. Due to over breeding of the Thoroughbred, not only does the Thoroughbred Times conclude Thoroughbred races horses are less sound than 60 years ago , but also, they are less used.

Moreover, why have we not had a Triple Crown winner in Thoroughbred horse racing since Affirmed in 1978? Could it be that the only requirements for breeding a Thoroughbred horse are a papered mare and money for a stud fee?

I imagine, even in 1978, horse breeding and racing wasn’t an incredibly easy or cheap “hobby”. Then, not every backyard horse owner could afford a.) a papered Thoroughbred mare, or b.) a 500 mile haul to the stallion. Today, cheap, seedy racetracks are numerous and vastly outnumber the celebrity packed racing events profiled on T.V. It is perceived as “easy” now for anyone to think they can breed the next Kentucky Derby winner. For $250, someone can pick up a lame and unproven (and possibly even unraced) Thoroughbred mare and breed her to an equally lame or unproven Thoroughbred stallion for as little as $300. Boom! For less than a beater car, you too can own the next derby champ!

Wrong.

Of course, many Thoroughbreds going for meat are actually well bred, expensive horses. Some may have stud fees of $500,000 or more. By and large, racehorses don’t retire to green pasture if they don’t win. They mostly go to auction. Even when trainers try their best to find a new owner and a new job for the horse, Thoroughbreds off-the-track are not just for anyone. Most of them need experienced handlers and trainers.

With the 2008 Kentucky Derby ready to hit the starting gate on May 3rd, what is the average American going to see of the racing industry? Horses worth millions of dollars? Shiny, lucky horses cared for better than most people?

I wish happenings at an average American Thoroughbred Racetrack were televised. Horses running at tracks not called Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, or Pimlico don’t have the luxury of being considered anything but expendable or replaceable. And besides, with reality TV all the rage, is there anything more cut throat [pun intended] than watching broke down horses running in races that are paying out $500 with the losers highly unlike to get another chance?

The large majority of horses who will not see the glamorous camera lenses pointed at them (beside closed circuit monitoring) are only bred to be good for a year or two. These “modern” Thoroughbreds, the ones at your average, dirty, shady, tracks, aren’t bred to run the Kentucky Derby; they are bred to MAYBE, MAYBE win their owners and investors a couple thousand dollars. The main purpose of the average Thoroughbred is to honor the owner with the distinction of owning a racehorse. Thoroughbreds, by their nature, are bred to be hot, a trait which does not to serve them well outside of running. They are no longer bred with long lines, or big strides even. They are bred to run and move flat, fast, and that’s it. Outside of the few races they MIGHT run, Thoroughbred racehorses serve limited purpose.

Interestingly enough, rel=nofollow [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=980DE4D9143FF930A15754C0A9659C8B63]even Kentucky Derby winners aren’t safe from slaughter. With the 2002 slaying of 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand at a Japanese slaughterhouse, the horse racing industry has proven time and time again it does not even value it’s most prize assets.

Thusly, even well bred but only “medium” caliber racehorses, such as those bought and sold at the Keeneland Auction for an average of $100K, may not ever win, even at a small racetrack. With the hopes of “cleaning up” at the ghetto tracks, these “Kentucky” bred horses still are without value unless the winnings come in early and frequently.

The main purpose today’s “modern” Thoroughbred is to honor the owner with the distinction of owning a racehorse.

Luckily, there is a good chance a Kentucky bred Thoroughbred horse could posses some very nice athletic attributes that could result in a nice hunter/jumper, dressage, or eventing home. Still, the original breeders, owners, and trainers of racehorses are generally unconcerned with where the horses end up. The racing industry wipes their hands clean of losers without regard for the welfare of the horses. Slaughter, new career, loving home – who cares! Whatever gets them off the training and boarding bill, its fine by the racehorse owner.

As an American horse community, we need to start looking at a way to fund “unwanted” horses that are considered “garbage” with either euthanasia, or when applicable, retraining programs. Or more importantly, let’s limit racehorse breeding to owners and trainers who only commit their funds to providing for a horse throughout the duration of its life, regardless of its winnings. If the racing community had to fork over money for the lifetime care of its horses, the unwanted horse population would dry up.

The horse industry needs a plan, a good plan, to help lower unwanted horse numbers. Stopping horse slaughter is only going to be beneficial once we stop having too many horses. In order to stop horse slaughter, the Humane Society of the United States should do one of two things:

1.) Provide the shelters and means necessary to retrain or humanely euthanize unwanted, unadaptable horses
2.) Take giant steps forward to limit the breeding of all horses, not just racing Thoroughbreds

In addition, the HSUS should go after the racing community for some money to start covering the humane destruction or lifetime care of the horses it produces. Now that the Kentucky Derby is underway, why don’t some of these trainers, owners, breeders, and jockeys making BIG money in horse racing industry give some money back, to the horses themselves?

If the racing community had to fork over money for the lifetime care of its horses, the unwanted horse population would dry up.

Let’s stop breeding low quality Thoroughbreds, shut down the seedy racetracks, and start a rehab and retraining humane society that can help with these unwanted horses either through re-homing (realistically), or humane euthanasia.

And frankly, lets stop breeding low quality horses of any kind. The Thoroughbred racing industry is not solely to blame for horse slaughter or unwanted horses altogether. However, Thoroughbred horse racing is the highest grossing and highest profile entity of the horse world. For naysayers of horse slaughter, Thoroughbred racing is an easy target because of its money, power, and fan base, but there is no better time than to call out an institution on it’s dirty little secrets than when shone national media spotlight (rest assured, if Premarin horses ended up with global coverage on the rel=nofollow [http://www.oxygen.com/]Oxygen network, we’d be all over that too).

Please, lets organize a cause with a better, more logical, long-term answer for unwanted horses than taking on American horse slaughter. Though the last three horse slaughter plants were shut down in 2007, bottom of the market horse welfare has not increased. Once we gain control over the source of the unwanted horses, only then will we produce effective measures against combating horse slaughter.

It all began a about a hundred years ago when the world of horse racing was rocked by the emergence of women competitors. At about 1904, women started coming into sight, whether they were playing important roles such jockeys, or equally important backstage roles as trainers and breeders. The following are some of the most popular women horse race enthusiasts since 1904.

Well-known Women Horse Racing Owners:

Laska Durnell – owned and entered “Elwood” in the Kentucky Derby in 1904. Also trained by a woman, Mrs. J.B. Prather, Elwood was the first starter and winner in a field of five.

Diane Crump was the very first female jockey to enter a pari-mutuel race in North America. Julie Krone was the first female winner of a Triple Crown Event. Also popularly known as the “all time leading female first”, having won “Colonial Affair” at Belmont in 1991. Tami Purcell won the most races with champion horses. Purcell is also considered to be the top female rider of her time.

Strong Female Horse Racing Trainers:

Mary Hirsch – The daughter of a trainer herself, Hirsch was one of the first women trainers in the 1930′s. According to professionals, she was the “pioneering woman trainer” of her day.

Mary Kein – She trained “Indian Maiden”, who afforded her the privilege of being the only woman to win three consecutive Kentucky Oaks titles in 1959, 1960, and 1961.

Jenine Sahadi is a spirited, posting two victories, a second, third and fourth among her seven starts. The victories were posted by Lit de Justice and Elmhurst in back-to-back Sprints in 1996 and ’97. The late-running Lit de Justice was third in the ’95 Sprint. Also that year, the Sahadi-trained Fastness (Ire) was a solid second in the Mile

The answer behind all this is, simply, that horses are most dependent on people. There are many stories of stallions protecting their herds with tricks that only a good mind could manage. Range horses know the dangers they are up against and react much differently than pasture-raised animals.

The domestic horse is protected with shelter, good food, and care by an honest owner. He seldom has to think about more than play or having his own way. His reasoning comes from boredom, the desire to get out of work, and a search for forbidden food. Horses copy each other. If one animal sees another break a fence, raid the hay barn, or find the grain barrel or even open a gate, he immediately wants the same and follows the same procedure to get it.

Watch your horse for an indication of what he is going to do. Actually, an animal telegraphs every move he will make. It is up to the owner to learn to “read” his horse. When an animal is going to shy or buck the muscles of his back tense and can be felt through the saddle.

The ears tell volumes. Ears stiffly forward means the animal is acutely alert. This means interest, curiosity, or fear. The conditions presented will tell the rider what it means. One ear forward and one back means he is listening for the rider and keeping an ear pointed for something ahead.

Ears laid slightly back means he doesn’t like something or doesn’t want to do what is asked. Ears laid back flat against the head means the animal is vicious or angry. He will try to fight, either the owner or another horse.

Horses have a pattern of thought, and once you know them you learn how they react to different situations. But remember, these big animals are afraid of everything they cannot understand or see. If a horse realized his strength, we would never handle him. But he is dependent on man. This is the secret of handling a horse and making a useful animal out of him.

A horse needs something to depend on. You seldom see him alone by choice. At the racetrack the thoroughbred has a chicken on his stall door, or a goat to share his hay, or a dog to lie at his feet, or a cat to rub against his legs. Sometimes a small pony shares his stall; he may look for a favorite groom who talks to him; often there is a quiet understanding between the trainer and the horse, but… there is always something… someone.

When a horse becomes accustomed to your presence and your voice he will begin to take on personality. A quiet, authoritative voice that can also soothe and give confidence will win an animal quicker than anything else. The horse may be able to understand only twelve command words, but the tone of your voice will speak many things to him. Although the horse is normally timid, he will develop confidence in you to the point where he will trust you implicitly.

The horse demands attention and craves affection. However, it must be remembered that a horse is made to do things by fear, hunger, thirst, and biological urge. So we use these things to our advantage without forgetting the other requisites that round out the complete picture of the horse, such as attention and affection. He does things only to satisfy his hunger, demands for comfort, and curiosity and attention. He cannot concentrate for long periods of time.

All the Thoroughbreds in Britain today can trace their ancestry back to the Three Foundation Sires brought to England from the Middle East between the late 1600s and early 1700s. These are the Godolphin Arabian(1729), Darley Arabian(1704), and the Byerley Turk(1680s). There are 74 Foundation mares who mated with the Foundation sires, and they came from a variety of breeds among England’s racing horses.

Byerley Turk was captured by Captain Robert Byerley at the 1686 Battle of Buda. In 1689, he was sent to Ireland with his master to be part of King William’s War, and they served in the Battle of Boyne as well. The horse is said to have been dark brown in color, with well-known Arabian features such as his arched neck, large eyes, and high-carried tail.

Byerley Turk traces his line to relatively few of today’s Thoroughbreds – 3.3% as opposed to the Godolphin Arabian’s 13.8% and the Darley Arabian’s 95%.

The Godolphin Arabian, also known as the Godolphin Barb, is named after his most famous owner, Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin. There is some controversy as to whether the Godolphin horse was actually an Arabian or a Barb, and this controversy continued to shroud him until his offspring Lath won the Queen’s Plate at the Newmarket races nine successive times. About fifteen hands high, this bay horse has seen its descendants mating with those of Byerley Turk and Darley Arabian to produce several winning Thoroughbreds through the years.

The Darley Arabian is the most famous and most important of the three Foundation Sires. He was a bay Arabian, bought in Syria in 1704 by Thomas Darley. From what information can be accessed, the Darley Arabian was a sight for sore eyes – beautiful and refined, and about 15 hands high.

Like both the other Foundation Sires – coincidentally enough – the Darley Arabian also saw his paternal line continued by one single descendant for four generations. In this case, the bearer of the line was the iconic Eclipse, who was Darley Arabian’s great-great-grandson. Recently, research has revealed that over 95% of today’s stallions have a Y-chromosome that is identical to the Darley Arabian.

Thoroughbreds are among the most famous, coveted and prized breeds of horses. They are known for their speed and agility on the track, and their “hot-blooded” temperament off it.

What makes the Thoroughbred special is the high percentage of Type IIa muscle fibers it carries. Type IIa muscle fibers generate great speed but also allow for endurance, which is why the Thoroughbred is as fast as the fastest and can still maintain its speed for considerable distances in horse races.

A horse race form is a printed program that displays all of the necessary information about a horse race. It will usually list the scheduled races, the names of the horses, and other pertinent race information. A horse race card helps bettors make an informed betting choice. People often want to know who the parent’s of the horse are and their names. This information is usually, but not always included. This data is useful for bettors to determine possible horse performance through lineage.

It is valuable to know who handled the horse’s upbringing, the amount of weight, including the jockey that the horse will be carrying. Obvious other facts of importance are who the trainer is, who the owner is, certainly the jockey who has a huge part to play in a big race. His ability to guide the horse in the race often spells the difference between victory and defeat.

There are other sections on the forms as well but the summary of past results is very important. These are crucial to viewers who want to distinguish which horse they have backed.

Other races sometimes require that horse must be a “non winner of three”. This is called an allowance race. Horses entered in this type of race is usually chosen to be prepped for better races. Most of the time these horses go on to compete in handicap and stake races.

Another type of race, and probably the most common, is the claiming race. A claiming race may also be “optional.” Before the race, owners are asked to specify an amount by which the thoroughbred may be claimed or purchased for.

You can rest assured that the racing field is leveled by this requirement. Obviously, owners will not list better horses in a claiming race. This type of race may be a good place to expose or train your weaker horses. Who knows? They might just need a little training to turn into a champion. Just make sure you are ready to part with your horse.

If you don’t want to part with your horses and you want to list them in a race to see just how they perform or to familiarize them with competitive races, a maiden race is the best avenue for this. This type of race is confined for horses with no record of wins. The winner of the race is said to have “broken his maidenhood.”

Till date, the National Museum and Hall of Fame has named merely 5 people as ‘Exemplars of Racing’ in the entire history of American Thoroughbred horse racing. For a jockey to qualify as an inductee to the Hall of Fame, it is compulsory that he be licensed for 20 years. Alternately, a jockey is eligible for the Hall of Fame even if he has been retired for a minimum of 5 years. If a trainer is licensed and has been actively involved with Thoroughbreds for a minimum of 25 years, he too is eligible. A trainer who has been retired for at least 5 years also matches the eligibility criteria of the Hall of Fame. As per the 2007 Hall of Fame Day, the Hall of Fame boasts popular racing champions of which 176 are Thoroughbred race horses, 84 are trainers and 88 are jockeys.

All thoroughbreds retired for more than 25 calendar years, qualify through the Historic Review Committee. Similarly, jockeys and trainers who have been retired for more than 25 years become eligible through the Historic Review Committee. The 20-25 year criteria for jockeys and trainers may be relinquished. However, a waiting period of 5 years has to be observed before they can become eligible.

For a thoroughbred race horse to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, the eligibility criteria requires that the horse must be retired for at least 5 full calendar years. The track is named after John and Henry Churchill. The two leased eighty acres of land to their nephew Colonel Meriweather Lewis Clark, Jr. Clark was actually grandson of famous explorer William Clark. He was also the president of the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association. Richard Ten Broeck was a horse breeder and trainer and Clark’s father-in-law. Broek was an accomplished trainer, regularly attending the English Derby at Epsom Downs in London. He was the man that introduced Clark to the world of horse racing.

Louisville had always had a love affair with horseracing. After all, it was home to Oakland racecourse as well as Woodlawn. When these two tracks closed, there was a void in Louisville that needed filling. Churchill Downs would do just that.

For quite some time, Churchill had a reputation as a gambling hall. Some changes needed to be made and in 1893 the track was sold to a syndicate that was led by William Applegate. New changes were implemented including shortening the track and the commissioning of the twin spire grandstand in 1895. A new tradition would also be implemented that year – the adorning of the Kentucky Derby winner in a garland of roses.

The twin spires are the most recognizable feature of Churchill Downs. They have been standing since 1895 and were designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez. Since the spires were built, several renovations have been made to the track itself. Today, the Churchill Downs complex covers over 147 acres, nearly double its original size. The dirt oval main track is a mile while the turf track is 7/8 of a mile. From 2001 to 2005, the grandstand underwent a $121 million renovation. The renovation replaced the clubhouse and added 79 luxury suites and the twin spires were refurbished.

Another unique addition to Churchill Downs was the adding of a mural that depicted the 96 jockeys that had won the Kentucky Derby from 1875 to 2004. The mural was painted by Pierre Bellocq, who updated the mural in 2008 to reflect all of the winning jockeys and trainers to date. The renovation was somewhat of a controversy since the new grandstand suites block full view of the twin spires, although they are still the highest points of the facility.

2000 Guineas

This is the opening Classic of the season and it is open to three year old colts and fillies. It is raced over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket and is a big test of speed, stamina and courage over an undulating straight course. Although it is open to fillies they very rarely run, they are normally entered for the 1000 Guineas (See below). For the colts it is also the first leg of the triple-crown; which is made up from the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger. This year the race will be run on 2nd May, which is the opening day of the Guineas Festival.

1000 Guineas

The second Classic of the season, which is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies only and is also raced over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. The race also forms the first leg of the Fillies triple-crown, which can be completed by winning this race, the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger. It is raced on the second day of the Guineas Festival, which this year will be 3rd May.

The Epsom Oaks

The third Classic is the Epsom Oaks, which like the 1000 Guineas is only open to 3 year old fillies. However this is raced on the Epsom Downs race course over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs in length. The Oaks forms the second leg of the Fillies Triple Crown and is one of the most valuable fillies only races in the world. This year it will be run on June 4th.

The Epsom Derby

The Derby is probably the most famous and prestigious race of the five English Classics and is renowned the World over. Although it is open to fillies as well as colts, it is rare for them to be entered, with the Fillies usually opting for the Epsom Oaks. Like the Oaks, it is run at Epsom Downs race course over a 1 mile 4 furlongs and forms the second leg of the colts triple crown. The race will take place this year on June 5th.

St Leger

The fifth and final Classic race of the season is the St Leger which is open to three year old colts and fillies and is raced at Doncaster race course over the longer distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs. It is a big test of stamina and often its winners stay in training for the following year. In some respects the St Leger has lost some of its importance, due mainly to its distance. The last colt to have won the Triple Crown was the great Nijinsky in 1970 and the last filly to have won the fillies version was Oh So Sharp in 1985. The St Leger takes place on 12th September.

The importance and prestige of the five classic races is underpinned by not only the prize money available to the winner of each races, all of which are well in to six figures (the prize money available for the Epsom Derby is £1.25 million) but also by the potential breeding values of the winning horses. Newmarket was the venue for the first horse racing meetings in Britain, and horse races became a professional sport and the subsequent legal betting and racecourses quickly followed, with Ascot being founded in 1711 by Queen Anne.

In order to qualify, a harness horse must pace or trot a mile in a specified time. For instance, depending upon the state in which the horse is qualifying, it may have to pace a mile in 2:06. While the time may not be what horses are winning races with, it does show the racing authority and public that the horse has been in training and is at least capable of pacing a reasonable mile.

There are many situations with thoroughbreds where a horse is returning and the public has no idea how the horse will race. The reason this situation is bad for thoroughbred racing is because it makes the public suspicious that something underhanded is being foisted off on them. Furthermore, it may make many people choose not to bet the race. Anything that causes a decrease in betting is ultimately bad for racing.

Remember that racing stables and studs have a lot of young horses to break in a very short time. And these horses don’t have to know much – they need to accept a rider, go fast, and stop.  Later, they’ll need to know how to enter starting stalls, and respond in different ways to a jockeys commands, but for most youngsters, they need to be broken just enough to start training.

Many training stables use natural horsemanship techniques to get these thoroughbreds trained.  Natural horsemanship works very well for thoroughbred training; it teaches horses to move forward – which is pretty essential for a racehorse – and to accept a saddle, bridle, and a rider very quickly.

More and more training stables are using round pens and natural horsemanship methods to get their youngsters ready for the track as quickly as possible.  The leadership training the horses get in the round pen is valuable when they need to follow a handler into the starting stalls, or if they have to adapt to new surroundings frequently.  For many trainers, natural horsemanship training is the method of choice for breaking their horses.

If you’ve just adopted a retired racehorse, think about natural horsemanship for re-training your horse.  Much of the groundwork has been done for you – your horse will accept a saddle and bridle and a rider, and will be conditioned to move forward. Really, all you need to do now is add consistency, and control.

For this, remember that the language a racehorse uses, and that it expects from you, is very similar to what you use in natural horsemanship.  After all, racing is a natural instinct for horses – most are very happy to run, and to run fast – and jockeys use a lot of hidden and surprisingly natural methods to control their horses because they simply can’t force them to do anything in the heat of a race.

A complete and thorough evaluation should be scheduled with your veterinarian to assess whether or not your mare if fit to breed. If you take it for granted and skip this step, you are putting the health of your mare at risk and will be losing money along with the possibility of not delivering of a foal. Logic prescribes that it is prudent to only breed mares that are physically sound, which is why you should not skip this important step of the assessment of your mare. Also, you should have a complete examination and set up a plan for nutrition, vaccinations, and parasite control that will be required for during this time.

The spring is the primary breeding season for mares. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, the ideal time to breed mares is during the months of May through August. A mare’s pregnancy last for about 335 to 342 days, but this number is quite varied. If you are breeding your mare for a racing foal, the relative age and its official age are very important. It is important to breed early in the, although you have to remember that mares do not ovulate at this time, so you will have to take extra measures and consider the costs that will be involved to breed your mare at this time.

If you are going to breed your mare to produce a racing foal you have to convince her that it is spring in December. One of the ways to approach this is to have your mare under supplemental light starting as early as late November. You want her exposed to 16 hours of light per day and whether you are increasing during the morning, evening hours or both, it is important to remain consistent each day. Approximately after 60 days of supplemental light, the mare will start to ovulate and be ready to breed in the spring. Do not stop using the supplemental light until you know your mare is pregnant.

The single most important cause of inefficient reproductive breeding is in poor management of the horse. If you are not familiar with the breeding cycles of the horse, it is worth your while to learn as much as you can about their ovulatory seasons to maximize your chances for birthing a foal at the appropriate time. One of the factors that can affect even the best attempts at breeding is if there is an infection in the reproductive tract. This can usually be managed with antibiotics.

There are two methods used for breeding mares natural and artificial insemination (AI). To reduce the possibility of human error natural breeding is the most appropriate. If artificial insemination is to be used, you have to be very careful because the more humans are involved, the higher the probability of an error to occur which could negatively affect the outcome of the pregnancy and or birth.

Teasing the mare to monitor their estrous cycles is a very important factor to a sound-breeding program if you do not want to rely on drugs to synchronize the estrous cycle. The way this is accomplished is to expose your mare to a stallion and observe her behavior. If she does not react she may need to be exposed to more than one stallion. The mare that is ready will be calm near the stallion and those that are not will be more agitated with their presence. If breeding occurs a few hours after ovulation, it is usually not very successful. If this is your first time at breeding mares your veterinarian will be able to help you assess the fertility of your mare.

In conclusion remember way you plan and execute your breeding program is essential to success. Once your mare is pregnant carefully monitor her throughout especially when the anticipated time comes for the foal to be delivered.

“Our responsibility in managing SoHo is to provide better alternatives for Kentucky’s at risk horses. Limiting the number of unqualified breeding colts and stallions in Kentucky is a giant step toward reducing the likelihood of crisis that many unwanted horses face,” KHC Board President Madelyn Millard said.

Eligible applicants may work directly with local veterinarians to schedule services. After service completion, the veterinarians are directly paid a portion of fees (up to $100 per horse not to exceed $250 per household for multiple horses).

“This program is a win-win for Kentucky horses because their owners will have access to affordable castration services and the horses will be seen by a local veterinarian,” Millard continued. “While onsite to perform the geld service, the veterinarian may also be able to provide the owner information on up to date herd health management practices. Ultimately this may lead to an improved relationship between the equine veterinarian and their clientele.”

Geld voucher funding is available by advance application only to Kentucky residents with non-commercial operations. Restrictions and some limitations apply. All arrangements for castration services are the responsibility of the horse owner and should be made after application approval.

Stalls are available for any unwanted Thoroughbred whose racing career is over that has been surrendered to KyEHC. This option has been available for more than six months. The number of owners choosing this option has increased significantly as the economy has declined and as more owners have become aware of how easy it is to surrender their horses to KyEHC. Upon arrival at KyEHC, all horses are given a physical evaluation by a veterinarian and those that are physically and mentally sound are available for adoption.

KyEHC surrender forms are available from the Racing Secretary’s office at each track. When surrender papers are completed at the racetracks, KyEHC has volunteers at each track to handle, feed and water the horses until transportation arrangements can be made to get the horse to KyEHC’s central Kentucky farm, usually within 24 hours.

KyEHC’s Mission is to provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Kentucky’s unwanted equines, regardless of breed: to educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis; and, to work with and serve as a model for organizations with the same mission in other states: to save America’s equines from inhumane treatment.

“We have taken in over 400 horses since opening our doors in April 2007, and approximately 275 of those have been Thoroughbreds. We are in desperate need of funding to continue and are asking the Thoroughbred industry to support KyEHC to ensure this option will continue to be available for Kentucky’s Thoroughbreds,” stated Development Director Cyndi Greathouse.

KyEHC, a charitable 501(C)3 organization that is sustained solely through grants and private donations, is the only equine organization in the state of Kentucky with an open-door policy where no equine in need of shelter is ever turned away and no fee is required to surrender an equine.

“Hi! I have 2 thoroughbreds, both now 16, and 20 years young! I have been able to stop gas colicing 100% in the last year, and now have 8 thoroughbreds in my study, that have colic history, and they have not coliced since being in my program!

I am new to posting, not sure how to do this effectively, but trying to let others know about what we are doing! My hardkeeper was colicing every month, and the last attack was so bad, I thought he would die! Now, we are approaching 1 year without incident, and I am trying to help others!

I am at a horse rescue in Georgia, and we try all kinds of things to help horses survive and thrive! The barn owner suggested I try a tablespoon of Baking Soda in with my supplements to see if that stopped the colic, and it did! I guess she knows many people who take it with water when they have an upset stomach! This was news to me, but here we are 1 year later, and 9 throughbreds, including mine, have not coliced!

This is my informal study, to try and help as many horses and owners who cannot find solutions to this unpredictable health hazard! I guess this is like taking TUMS for horses! We have researched baking soda side effects, and have not found anything notable! I hope this info. will help others!! The Seattle Slew story started at a public auction in Kentucky–not exactly a venue expected to produce a future champion. Slew, in particular, was an unlikely heir to greatness. He was somewhat clumsy looking due to a front right forefoot splay and had a shuffling gait at trot. Slew wasn’t a beautifully majestic creature like his Triple Crown winning predecessor, Secretariat. In fact, he could have been considered borderline ugly–to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘Baby Huey’ by the Keeneland staff. What wasn’t apparent at the time was Slew’s mixture of championship intangibles–competitive desire, toughness, heart and enthusiasm. His owners had unwittingly stumbled onto an equine Muhammad Ali, and his competitive fire quickly became apparent to his trainers and jockeys. His first race came at Belmont Park in 1976, and he entered–and won–three races as a two year old giving a glimpse as to what like ahead.

As a three year old, he quickly gained notice by winning his three Derby prep races, including the prestigious Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled from the gate much like War Emblem did in the 2002 Belmont. Unlike 2002′s Triple Crown contender, however, Slew was able to recover from that miscue and basically force his way through a pack of other horses to position himself at the front of the field at the quarter mile pole. He went on to win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. Another tough victory in the Preakness set up his Triple Crown winning run at the Belmont, which he won by 4 lengths.

Slew continued to campaign as a four year old, but in the days before the Breeder’s Cup there weren’t many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in 1978, where he sired champions such as the aforementioned Swale and 1992 Belmont Champ AP Indy. Slew stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky from 1985 until early 2002 when he was moved to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, KY following a spinal operation.

Slew may not have earned the appreciation he deserved in his prime, coming so closely on the heels of the charismatic 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat–arguably the greatest thoroughbred race horse in history. The jockeys that rode him, however, understood fully what a special animal they were dealing with. Jockey Angel Cordero gave Seattle Slew this lofty praise: “If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet.”

Slew was laid to rest at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, under a statue.

The new EU rules will become effective in April 2010, requiring that either slaughtered animals have complete health records showing they have not received banned substances or a 180 day quarantine for the horses. Claude Boissonnealut, head of the CFIAs red meat programs, has indicated that Canada will likely abide by the 180 day quarantine, as mandated by the EU.

Equine welfare advocates have warned of the contamination of American horse meat for years. Substances banned from food animals range from toxic wormers to phenylbutazone (PBZ), the “aspirin” of the horse world, and even include fertility drugs that can cause miscarriages in women. “PBZ is a known carcinogen and can cause aplastic anemia (bone marrow suppression) in humans”, says Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) member, Dr. Ann Marini, Ph.D., M.D.

But the list of contaminants is not limited to conventional drugs. “Some of the garbage ‘treatments’ that are given to performance horses included iodine-peanut oil injections along the spine, anabolic steroids, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids and even snake venom”, explains Dr. Nicholas Dodman, DVM at Tufts University.

The new rules will mean that horses coming from auctions and other sources in the US will have to be kept drug free on a feedlot for half a year. Producers estimate that feeding horses that long will more than double their cost, making them less competitive with horses from other sources. And that is likely to be only half their problem.

EWA member Christy Sheidy, of Another Chance 4 Horses, routinely rescues slaughter bound horses from Pennsylvania’s New Holland auction. Sheidy warns, “Outbreaks of diseases like strangles and shipping fever will be inevitable in these quarantine feedlots. Left untreated, many horses may die before they can be slaughtered.” Treating the horses would restart their quarantine time.

In recent years, European authorities have cracked down on horse meat producers within the EU, requiring a “passport” system that specifically documents whether a horse has received such substances. Owners must state that their horses are intended for slaughter.

USDA statistics show that in 2008, the US exported 56,731 horses to Mexico and 77,073 horses to Canada for slaughter, resulting in the second highest slaughter total since 1995. Diners abroad have no idea whatsoever what dangerous chemicals they are eating in the American horsemeat that is shipped from plants across our borders.

In an interview with EWA, Henry Skjerven, a former director of the Natural Valley Farms slaughter operation in Saskatchewan, Canada, said: “Unfortunately, North America, US and Canada, were never geared for raising horses for food consumption. The system as it stood when we were killing horses was in no way, shape or form, safe, in my opinion.”

Skjerven went on to say, “We did not know where those horses were coming from, what might be in them or what they were treated with. I was always in fear – I think that it was very valid – that we were going to send something across there [to the EU] and we were simply going to get our doors locked after we had some kind of issue with the product.”

Skjerven’s plant began killing horses in September of 2007 for the Belgium’s Velda Group following the closing of their Cavel slaughter plant in DeKalb, Illinois. Natural Valley’s horse slaughter plant was closed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in January of 2009, for health issues.

Unlike Canada, horses going to Mexico are killed in two types of slaughter plants. The three largest plants export the meat to the EU and will fall under the same new rules. Mexican authorities have yet to announce whether their smaller plants, that provide meat for domestic consumption, will be required to follow the new rules.

“We don’t need to eat horses. Horses are for riding, jumping and doing a whole lot of great things. They’re not food”, concluded Skjerven.

The retired IBM employee and his wife have a personal stake in the 2-year-old dark bay colt through a partnership in West Point Thoroughbreds.

The Balfes spent $14,000 for a small share of Middle of the Nite, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and scheduled to run in his first race on Whitney Day on Aug. 8.

“The more you get into the sport, you understand how lucky you’ve got to be to get (a horse) to the racetrack, much less winning,” Mike Balfe said.

That opportunity was once thought to belong to a privileged few owners, those with names such as Whitney and Phipps, wealthy enough to participate in “The Sport of Kings.”

However, West Point and other partnerships have allowed horse racing fans of more limited means to get into the sport they love.

The Balfes are among 15 people who own a share of Middle of the Nite, a son of Offlee Wild whom West Point purchased for $300,000 at the Keeneland sales in April.

“I really believe that partnerships have got a bloodline into the sport,” said Balfe, who has a share of five horses. “It’s exploded over the last couple of years, there’s no doubt. We couldn’t have afforded a Lear’s Princess or an Irish Smoke on our own. You don’t want those bills and that (financial) exposure.”

Lear’s Princess upset Belmont Stakes champion Rags to Riches in the Gazelle Stakes at Belmont in 2007. That same year, the Balfes got their first Grade I victory at Saratoga when Irish Smoke won the Spinaway.

“It’s a real thrill to beat the big boys,” said Mike Balfe, 56, who attended Yonkers Raceway often while growing up in Port Chester.

West Point also owns Macho Again, who won the Jim Dandy last year and will compete in this year’s Whitney. The Macho Again partnership includes Roger and Joyce Locks of Saratoga Springs.

West Point was founded 1996 by Terry Finley, a former Army Ranger who went to the races with his father as a child.

He’s built an operation that has 70 horses in training and 430 partners around the country.

Finley said he’s up front with prospective buyers that the odds aren’t high of making money on a thoroughbred. And any winnings have to be split with several partners.

On the other hand, Finley said it makes sense to share expenses, especially in the middle of a national recession. Finley said the minimum share for a West Point horse is $9,000 to $10,000.

“If you’re a fan and you don’t really have any alliances in the business, that’s a pretty daunting outlook to think you’re going to walk into a sale (alone) and pay a lot of money for a horse that’s never had a saddle,” Finley said.

West Point partners tend to be men over 50 who are business owners or executives, according to Finley.

There are exceptions, such as Jay Geiger, 37, who’s the head athletic trainer at the University at Albany. He owns a five percent share of Missy Loves Mambo, a New York-bred filly with four career starts.

“I love the game, I love being e to watch the horses work out every week,” Geiger explained. “I love the feeling of being part of a team.”

Cot Campbell helped originate partnerships in the 1970s when he started Dogwood Stable, based in Aiken, S.C. Dogwood raced Preakness winner Summer Squall in 1990.

Campbell said the old-guard owners at first looked down on partnerships. Since then, they’ve become more accepting as it’s brought new blood to the sport.

“They thought it didn’t amount to anything but a bunch of people just messing around,” Campbell said. “Now they know it makes sense because it’s kept racing, I won’t say flourishing, but moving along.”

1) Maiden races – this type of thoroughbred horse racing pits untested horses against each other. This event is the debut of all race horses. Some people find this type of thoroughbred horse racing more exciting because of the fact that all of the horses involved are untried. The maiden race often determines the whole career of a race horse. This event will show the world just what a race horse is capable of.

Often, thoroughbreds of varying ages participate in maiden races. In this type of thoroughbred horse racing, the horses carry similar weights in order to even the odds. There are also no handicapped penalties involved in this type of thoroughbred horse racing.

2) Allowance racing – this type of thoroughbred horse racing involves horses which have already participated in a maiden race but are not yet ready for the grand stakes race. Usually, this type of thoroughbred horse racing involves running for a purse that is slightly above the purse involved in maiden races. Some horse owners use these races to actually train their horses.

3) Grand stakes racing – this type of thoroughbred horse racing is the most popular with people since it often involves a lot of cash. People who go to this type of thoroughbred horse racing do so in order to bet their cash on their favorite horse. The “grand stakes” in this race refer not only to the money involved but also the reputation of the horse. A grand stakes race winner usually goes on to become a celebrity among horses.

The dreams of countless people are also at stake in this type of thoroughbred horse racing. This is because betting in this type of thoroughbred horse racing can cost a lot. People pin their hopes and dreams on one horse. This is the reason why this thoroughbred horse racing remains to be supported by people all over the world today.

4) Handicap race – this type of thoroughbred horse racing is, theoretically, the most even of all races. This is because all of the horses participating in such an event have been appropriately handicapped according to their performance in other races. More people bet at this type of thoroughbred horse racing because all of the odds are even. Theoretically, any horse can win in a handicap race.

Although thoroughbred horse racing gains popularity because of the cash, there are those people who see it as a test of spirit. There are horses which have the potential to be the best. However, if that horse did not have the will to win, then the potential would forever be useless. Thoroughbred horse racing is not just a game, it is a reflection of life.

A former jockey, he was employed this year as a rake man, responsible for raking the track smooth after the starting gate has been towed away following a start.

After the start of the seventh race on Sunday, Fowler-Wright was on top of the gate when the tractor began pulling it out of the way.While the gate was moving, Fowler-Wright either slipped or tried to jump off and fell. He was run over by the gate’s back tires.He was transported to San Joaquin General Hospital, where he died.

Friends of Fowler-Wright said he was originally from England and had worked as a jockey until about two years ago.

Fair officials are investigating the accident, and an employee meeting will be held Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Erika Monterroza said the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or Cal/OSHA, opened an investigation into the incident on Monday. An inspector will visit the work site, interview employees and fair officials, and review safety plans.Unless there were clear evidence of a hazard, Cal/OSHA would not stop the races from continuing, she said.

For the layman, the condyle is the bulbous bottom or distal end of the cannon bone that fits into the fetlock (ankle) joint.

Not only because of the memory of Eight Belles but also because Dunkirk is likely to be mended and sent to breeding shed where he will likely pass on the structural flaws that have lead to many of the current breakdowns in that line.

A word on racing injuries: So many things are genetic it’s scary and unsoundness is no exception. If you don’t think unsoundness can be passed on through horses, take a look at Eight Belles’ breeding. Everyone knows about her public breakdown, but don’t forget that she too was sired by Unbridled’s Song.

Unbridled’s Song was also the sire of Midshipman, 2008′s champion two year old and Eclipse Award winner. Midshipman broke down in Dubai while being prepared for this year’s Derby.

Another son of Unbridled’s Song, Old Fashioned, ran in the Arkansas Derby in preparation for the Kentucky Derby but sustained a slab-fracture of his near-side knee.

Go back just a couple of years to Barbaro. His lineage went straight back to Native Dancer, the same as Unbridled’s Song. In fact it has been estimated that approximately 70% of today’s thoroughbreds have Native Dancer in their lines. He had chronic foot problems that ended in his retirement .

At this weeks meeting, Jack Van Berg and John Shirreffs were the only people of note who spoke during Public Comments. Jerry Moss, who was also in attendance, chose not to speak.

I think it’s significant that the developer is the same one that has reduced Bay Meadows to a piles of rubble with that development project delayed indefinitely. The developer claimed that the hold ups were completely beyond his control, blaming the situation on lawsuits from equine interests.

Incidentally, 2009 is Hollywood Park’s 71st Anniversary.

Sometimes I’ll stop in the paddock at the track to see one of our trainers to catch up on the stable news, rather than dropping by the barn in the morning. On one such occasion, I was talking to Linda Rice just before C.C. Lopez was to ride for her.

When Chuckie saw me, he asked, “Can I ride Karakorum Way, again?” To which I replied, “Oh, you mean Way to Karakorum! Of course you can!”

Well, he got on her in her next start. She broke on top and led virtually every step of the way to a nice two length win. The pair will reunite in Wednesday’s April 8, first at Aqueduct and look capable of repeating their previous performance with another win.

Way to Karakorum is a three year-old filly by Roaring Fever out of Waywayanda. She’s in a limited partnership with over 50 partners. Her racing record for 2008-2009 is 11-2-3-1 $51,259. Limited partnerships like hers are based on 200 shares and generally start at $499 for the first share (0.5%).

Other owners, along with Solis II, are Carol Bienstock and Ann Winner of Encino, as well as William Strauss of Del Mar, whose brother, Jeff, is the chef at a restaurant they own in Del Mar, across from the racetrack. The name of the restaurant is the Pamplemousse Grille. Pamplemousse is French for Grapefruit.

Trained by Julio Canani, the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Kafwain, out of a Rubiano mare, is considered one of the West Coast’s leading Triple Crown prospects. The gray/roan colt was purchased for $150,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sale for 2-year-olds in training last March.

The $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4 is the next likely start for The Pamplemousse.

Logan was a beloved fixture in the breezeway at Santa Anita where his customers, and anyone else passing by his stand, were always greeted with his celebrated, “Have a lucky day!” He was a former boxer and Negro League baseball player,

Beginning in 2006, Santa Anita honored Eddie Logan with a stakes race in his name late in December. Formerly run as the Hill Rise Stakes, The Eddie Logan Stakes is for 2-year-olds at one mile on turf.

“Leaner times are here, so we’ve come up with some changes to make it easier to campaign a racehorse in 2009,” stated Dogwood Stable President W. Cothran “Cot” Campbell.  “Clearly this is a time when we must all make less money.”

“Quality horses are going to cost less at the sales this year,” said Campbell. “We think we can buy at 60 or 70 cents on the dollar from previous years. And Dogwood Stable’s markup on these reduced prices will be lessened by 20 to 40 percent on the horses purchased.”

Campbell explained that each of Dogwood’s horses would still be owned by a separate General Partnership; however, in 2009 some horses will be offered in a new eight-share format to go with Dogwood’s existing four-share model. This change will allow for a greatly reduced unit price.

“This experiment will commence with our purchases at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale on February 17,” said Campbell.

“Maintenance costs have been the bane of our existence and we are encouraged that they will decrease in the year ahead,” he continued. “We can’t control that, but we can certainly nag about it. We applaud the highly regarded Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, which has sent out a notice that fees are being reduced. I can’t see how other veterinarians, and other suppliers, can fail to follow suit. As trainers get hungrier they will too. The end use of a racehorse is to go to the races, win, and earn money. That’s a tough enough assignment under the best of conditions, but with excessive maintenance charges it is discouraging.”

Dogwood Stable has a minimum of four offerings a year. Two-year-olds are highlighted in two separate spring offerings. These individuals are purchased from the training sales in both Florida and Kentucky. The stable’s summer offering consists of yearlings purchased from Fasig-Tipton’s July and Saratoga August sales, while the fall offering represents purchases from the Keeneland September sale.

Kristin Chambers, executive director of Winding Road Equine Rescue and Retirement in Waverly, Kansas, found the 26-year-old Clever Trick horse in a kill lot in Emporia, Kansas. Chambers said Clever Allemont’s previous owner sold the horse to a dealer who sells horses for slaughter. Clever Allemont was set to be shipped out of the country to a slaughterhouse.
