McCain Gunning For Another Big Saturday Prize

Donald McCain, trainer of last Saturday’s tremendously brave John Smith’s Grand National winner Ballabriggs might not have a runner in the Scottish equivalent at Ayr this weekend but he is still targeting another big win as his Overturn bids to carry top weight to victory in the Isle of Skye Blended Whisky Scottish Champion Hurdle, writes Elliot Slater.

McCain is still riding the crest of a wave and soaking up the compliments following Ballabriggs’ Grand National win and victory in the Scottish Champion Hurdle would certainly provide some compensation to Overturn’s owner Tim Leslie whose Peddler’s Cross was one of the few down sides of the fixture for the McCain team when running a poor race behind Oscar Whisky in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle. Those following him in the horse racing betting odds would have been very disappointed.

Overturn certainly goes to Ayr with good prospects of landing the Grade 2 limited handicap having run a respectable race when finishing seventh to Hurricane Fly in the Stan James Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last month. His second to former champion hurdler Binocular in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Kempton in January looks the best form on offer in Saturday’s contest, but as a consequence he is set to give away weight all round to some useful rivals who include Alan King’s Mille Chief and Paul Nicholls’ Sanctuaire.

A confirmed front-runner who is equally at home on the Flat or over jumps, Overturn demonstrated last term with wins in the hugely valuable Northumberland Plate and the Galway Hurdle that he is much improved performer. The Barathea gelding, a winner of the Scottish Champion Hurdle 12 months ago off a 30lb lower mark than this Saturday, would be one of the few in the field not inconvenienced if the ground remains on the fast side of good and despite shooting up the handicap looks the one they all have to beat.

Along Hoping To Roll Back the Years

Naunton-based trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies is set to saddle up to three runners in this weekend’s eagerly anticipated John Smith’s Grand National. Most of the media attention is centred around veteran Hello Bud (ridden by Nigel’s son Sam), but the stable’s Roll Along is an interesting contender in his own right and well handicapped on the best of his old form, writes Elliot Slater.

A very useful hurdler in his youth, Roll Along was being talked off as a potential Gold Cup winner after running a fine second to Albertas Run in the Grade 1 RSA Chase at the 2008 Cheltenham Festival, a reputation that was further enhanced later that year when he impressively landed the valuable United House Gold Cup Handicap chase at Ascot, beating the smart Air Force One by four-lengths. As Grand National 2011 time approaches, must people will be looking elsewhere, but Roll Along could have a good account of himself.

Sixth to Kauto Star in the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup and then fourth to Notre Pere in the Grade 1 Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup (when rated 160), the Carroll House gelding then suffered training setbacks and wasn’t seen again after the 2009 term until pulling up in a Sandown handicap hurdle six weeks ago when clearly in need of the outing. His subsequent sixth behind Iconoclast in a Listed handicap chase at Ascot a couple of weeks later left the jury out as to whether he still retains the old ability, but off a mark of 143 he has been given a chance by BHA handicapper Phil Smith to be competitive if anywhere near his old form on Grand National day.

Twiston-Davies reports Roll Along to have come on for his two recent outings and expects him to be suited by the expected ‘good’ ground at Aintree. Aidan Coleman has been booked to take the ride on the 100/1 shot.

Devon Loch – a Grand National Flop Loved By All

One of the most famous horses in National folklore is Devon Loch – even though he didn’t win the race, the 1956 Grand National is more remembered for him than the winner E.S.B.

Devon Loch, owned by The Queen Mother appeared to have the race at his mercy when he propped, gave a half-leap around 50 yards from the finish, sprawled and unseated his jockey, Dick Francis. The crowd were shocked and stunned, along with Francis, although the owner shrugged off her obvious disappointment with the comment “That’s racing”. He was one of the most popular Grand National tips of that year, and thousands of punters were also left out of pocket.

There have been many theories and much debate over the intervening years as to why this incident had happened, some claim that it was cramp in the hindquarters of the horse, while others have blamed the shadow thrown by the water jump, only jumped on the first circuit at Aintree for making Devon Loch take off into that half-leap. Of course, there were some more sensationalist theories like that of a heart-attack suffered by the horse but he recovered far too quickly for that particular course of action to have taken place.

The truth will probably never be known but one of the outcomes of the race was that it inspired Francis to become a racing novelist so intrigued was he by the incident, this time it was Francis creating the mysteries. Over the years despite being robbed of a National victory Francis became more and more philosophical over the incident, claiming that if he had won the race then he would have not become the bestselling writer that he did.

Francis seemed to think that the water-jump theory held the most sway, although the crowd which were going mad at the thought of a Royal winner was also thought to be a contributory factor with the horse who noticeably pricks his ears on the run-in being distracted. In fact, Francis was lucky to stay on him; it was one of the strangest incidents ever in the race but made the losing Devon Loch more famous than the winner. Townend Likely To Miss Aintree Grand National

Paul Townend, currently clear at the top of the Irish jumps jockey’s championship and who had been expected to take the ride on one of the leading lights amongst Willie Mullins’ potential battalion of runners at Aintree on April 9 in the John Smith’s Grand National, looks set to be ruled out of the race after sustaining a suspected broken collar be in a fall at Navan on Saturday, just two weeks before the main event, writes Elliot Slater.

Earlier in the week Townend had seen championship rival Davy Russell appear to effectively be out of the title race having sustained a hand injury, but now that race has opened up again and more pressingly, Townend’s hopes of partnering one of Mullins’ much fancied runners – The Midnight Club if Ruby Walsh was to plump for Paul Nicholls’ What A Friend, or possibly Arbor Supreme – in the Aintree National look slim and those with Grand National free bets should remember this.

Having been on the crest of wave since his thrilling victory on Hurricane Fly in the Stan James Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, Townend came down to earth with a mighty bang at Navan, sustaining a crunching fall from the fatally injured Indian Buck from which he managed to walk away but was clearly in a lot of discomfort.

Willie Mullins still has six horses listed as possible runners in the big race amongst whom The Midnight Club has been grabbing all the headlines having been the subject of a sustained public gamble in the last week that has seen him cut to 10/1 favourite. Mullins’ retained jockey Ruby Walsh has been offered the ride but hasn’t yet made a decision.

The apparent Mullins second-string is Arbor Supreme, on whom Townend was going nicely in mid-division in last year’s renewal of the ‘world’s greatest steeplechase’ until he blundered and unseated his jockey at The Chair. Arbor Supreme can still be backed in places at 25/1.

Neville Crump and Sheila’s Cottage – The Perfect Grand National Match

A decade after first taking out a trainer’s licence, legendary Middleham-based trainer Neville Crump really made his name in the world of jump racing thanks to a remarkable mare, Sheila’s Cottage, in 1948.

The horse was described as a temperamental mare for whom Crump, nevertheless, had a huge affection. Perhaps Sheila’s Cottage was something of a soul mate for the famously blunt Crump – who was given even more reason to like the horse following her one-length win over First of the Dandies at odds of 50-1. She wasn’t in many people’s Grand National tips, but Crump wouldn’t have minded that.

The victory truly launched Neville Crump’s training career and helped establish Middleham in North Yorkshire as a National Hunt racing base to rival Lambourn. His string grew quickly from around six horses to nearly 30.

Sheila’s Cottage’s Grand National win was followed a year later by the first of his five Scottish National wins with Wot No Sun, a horse who was also twice placed in the National at Aintree.

Sheila’s Cottage was unfancied for the 1948 National, partly because no mare had won since Shannon Lass in 1902. But her 50-1 price tag was just half that of the only other mare in the race; Zahia.

But it was the two ladies who were to dominate the race that year. Zahia looked the certain to win approaching the second-last, but her jockey guided the horse the wrong way and she ran out before the last.

This left Crump’s Sheila’s Cottage clear of the field. Two days after her victory, the ever-curmudgeonly mare rewarded her winning jockey Arthur Thompson by biting off his thumb!

While most trainers wait a lifetime for a Grand National win, just four years separated Neville Crump’s first and second triumphs. In 1952, he won the race again with Teal, whose stablemate Wot No Sun was third. And in 1960, Crump trained the winner again in the shape of Merryman II whose 15-length win came in the last National before the formidable fences were modified.

Following the excitement of another fantastic Cheltenham Festival the racing world now turns it attention to the world-famous John Smith’s Grand National 2011 at Aintree.

As the race edges closer punters will be looking to the news emanating form the training yards for clues to the favoured runners and riders in order to select their bets.

Those looking for big odds each way chances will be interested to learn that trainer Dermot Weld has announced that the well-liked Majestic Concorde looks ever more likely to take a crack at the race.

The horse was a good winner of the Paddy Power Chase in December but has not been seen racing since. At current odds 33/1 in the ante post betting market he will certainly attract some support.

Another that will catch the eye is Quinz. The Philip Hobbs-trained winner of the Racing Post Chase is reported to be working very well at home and connections consider that he has been well handicapped to challenge for National honours.

Punters should be aware that soft going will result in a withdrawal and watch for this prior to striking any significant wagers.

In other news, those taking a long-term view should make a note of Minella Four Star. The David Pipe-trained horse won the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter on Saturday and is a prospect for the Grand National in 2012.

Waley-Cohen Hoping Aintree Time is Oscar Time

Amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen is still riding the crest of a wave after his tremendous performance in partnering the majestic Long Run to a famous success in last week’s Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, but he could potentially be in position to land the highest profile jumps race in the world when he partners his father’s Oscar Time in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree on April 9, writes Elliot Slater.

Waley-Cohen’s achievement in becoming the first amateur since Jim Wilson thirty years earlier to win steeplechasing’s blue riband, beating the modern greats of the sport Denman and Kauto Star, would be enough for most men to handle when riding horses isn’t even their day job, but in Oscar Time a chance awaits to land a historic double on a horse who is considered by many to be a genuine contender for honours in the Aintree marathon, a fact that is reflected in the betting.

Trained by Martin Lynch in County Dublin, Oscar Time was purchased by the Waley-Chen’s last autumn having already proved himself a talented staying chaser. They had been looking for a suitable mount for Sam to ride in the Grand National and in the 10-year-old Oscar gelding they determined that they had alighted on the right horse.

Generally on offer at 12/1 second favourite for Aintree, Lynch’s pride and joy will bid to give his talented amateur pilot the thrill of a lifetime in attempting to complete a unique and unprecedented double.

Cracker Bidding To Strike A National Blow For the Fairer Sex

Of the 82 horses still listed as possible runners in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree on April 9, only two are mares, one of which is the James Motherway-trained Bluesea Cracker, who seems likely to be given the green light to take her chance in the big race and strike a blow for the fairer sex, writes Elliot Slater.

Not many mares are asked to tackle the daunting Aintree fences and consequently the statistics show that no mare has won the race since Nickel Coin in 1951, but those mares that have been given a chance to show what they can do have invariably run well, the likes of Eyecatcher and Auntie Dot both running into a place in recent decades and those looking at the horse racing odds should remember this.

Irish mare Bluesea Cracker is already a proven stayer having overcome the stats once already when landing last season’s Powers Whiskey Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse last April, staying-on strongly in very testing ground under Andrew McNamara to beat Oscar Time by four-and-a-half lengths. The nine-year-old daughter of Buster King has been trained all season with the Grand National 2011 in mind and should be at her peak for next month’s race in which she is set to carry just 10st 4lbs.

Soft ground would be a bonus for Motherway’s mare who had a spin over hurdles at Naas in October before running well to finish fourth to the smart Midnight Chase at Cheltenham over three-and-a-half miles a month later. Returning from a three month break, Bluesea Cracker ran with promise in coming home sixth behind The Midnight Club in the Bobbyjo chase at Fairyhouse at the end of February and is currently dividing bookmaker opinion in being offered at odds ranging from 20/1 to 40/1 for the Aintree marathon.

Tragedy for McManus as Cheltenham Hope Backspin Dies

The fickle nature of racing has been demonstrated once again with the sad news that the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Backspin, one of a powerful team set to represent one of the sport’s leading owners JP McManus at the forthcoming Cheltenham Festival, was found dead in his stable on Wednesday morning having suffered a suspected heart attack, writes Elliot Slater.

The one-time ante-post favourite for the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle was purchased by McManus in May of last year for a whopping 220,000 guineas at the Doncaster Sales having impressively landed a highly competitive Punchestown bumper on his racecourse debut, beating the subsequently useful Nicene Creed by four-lengths.

Making his debut at Bangor in December, the six-year-old showed a good attitude and ran on strongly to beat Our Mick by three-lengths. O’Neill took many people by surprise in stepping Backspin up from that run-of-the-mill novice event to the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle a fortnight later over two-mile-five-furlongs. The shrewd Irishman clearly must have know he had a horse of latent ability as the Flemensfirth gelding ran out an impressive five-length scorer from subsequent Grade 2 winner Court In Motion, catapulting himself to prominence in the Cheltenham betting for a number of novice events.

At Cheltenham in late-January Backspin was sent off a warm favourite for a Grade 2 contest over the same trip, but after racing into the lead with a mile to run he was headed approaching the final flight and eventually faded on the run-in to finish a disappointing fourth behind Bob’s Worth, leaving his trainer baffled by the way he had capitulated in the closing stages.

Having recovered from that effort Backspin had appeared to be in good shape and was being prepared for a crack at one of two big novice hurdle events at the showcase fixture in less than two weeks time.

Rusty Dirar Remains On Target For County Hurdle

The Gordon Elliott-trained Dirar might have appeared to have a big chance on official figures when he faced the starter for a 12-furlong conditions race on the all-weather track at Kempton last week, but after an absence of nearly six months connections appeared delighted with his third place finish in the six-runner field, writes Elliot Slater.

The horse who gave his predominately jumps oriented trainer his biggest ever Flat success when landing the Ebor Handicap at York last August, went on to run a solid race to come home fifth to Samuel in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup in September, but hadn’t been out since and was clearly going to come on considerable for his run at Kempton.

Driven along by Eddie Ahern to go after the front runners when the pace lifted over two furlongs from home, the King’s Theatre gelding was never going to peg them back but kept on steadily to finish just under four-lengths behind the winner King Olav. With the Cheltenham Festival very much on the horizon this outing will surely have blown the cobwebs away and Elliott appeared delighted with the way his charge had shaped even though he was rated the best part of a stone better than his nearest rivals on official figures and the latest Cheltenham Festival odds suggest he has an excellent chance of winning the County Hurdle.

Dirar is being targeted at the two-mile Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle on the fourth day of the Cheltenham Festival meeting, a race that is always run at a furious pace and attracts plenty of runners. Last seen over timber when running a fine race to finish third to subsequent Champion Hurdle outsider Overturn in the Galway Hurdle last July, Dirar is currently on offer at odds of 14/1 for the County Hurdle and is one of a number of co-favourites for the race, along with the likes of Aegean Dawn, Recession Proof, and Ski Sunday.

Haggas Issues Kalk Bay Lincoln Warning

Newmarket handler William Haggas has issued a warning to punters considering supporting his ante-post Lincoln Handicap favourite Kalk Bay that it is unlikely that the four-year-old will make the cut for the traditional cavalry charge that signals the start of the Flat season on turf, writes Elliot Slater.

Kalk Bay needs 26 horses above him in the weights for the prestigious mile handicap to come out of the race in order to be guaranteed a run, and Haggas reckons that the chances of such an eventuality are pretty slim and anyone thinking about placing horse racing bets on the race should bear this in mind. Currently on offer as 12/1 market leader for the Doncaster race, the Hawk Wing gelding, who was unraced as a juvenile, proved himself a progressive performer through his three-year-old season and hopes are high that there is better to come in 2011.

After making a belated debut in a maiden at Newmarket last July (where he ran a promising fourth to Linnens Star), Haggas’ charge journeyed to Chepstow where he battled home in a seven furlong maiden by a neck from Waabel. Entered into handicap company on only his third start (off a mark of 74), Kalk Bay stepped up to a mile and duly won at Newmarket by over two-lengths on soft ground, under John Fahy. A month later he finished third off a 9lb higher mark in a seven-furlong Newcastle handicap before being switched to the Fibresand at Southwell where (off a mark of 86) he won bravely by a neck over a mile.

Still a relatively unexposed horse and now rated 92 for the start of this campaign, both punters and bookmakers have latched on to the fact that Kalk Bay could be a horse to follow, regardless of whether he manages to make the cut for the Lincoln Handicap, or not.

Newbury Investigate After Double Tragedy

No-one who set out for Newbury races on Saturday could possibly have imagined the awful scenes that would await them in the parade ring before the first race of what promised to be an outstanding day’s action at the track’s premier National Hunt fixture of the season, writes Elliot Slater.

Soon after the runners arrived in the parade ring for the opening novice hurdle (eventually won by 1/4 chance Al Ferof), handlers of the horses circling before a large crowd complained of getting static electric shocks from their horses – something almost unheard of and highly irregular. Just as the jockeys arrived to take their mounts both Marching Song and Fenix Two almost simultaneously started to jump around and within seconds of each other fell to the ground dead, almost certainly as the result of some kind of electric shock.

Stunned and distressed racegoers then had to take in the sight of former champion jockey and trainer Graham Thorner, part-owner of Marching Song, break down in tears at the loss of his Andy Turnell-trained horse for whom he clearly had held high hopes. Shocked trainers, owners and jockeys realized something unprecedented had occurred and then saw Nicky Henderson’s Kid Cassidy go down on his back legs before recovering and making his way down to the start. Although by this point, no one who had placed a horse racing bet would have really cared about the outcome.

All horses were checked by vets at the starting tape and allowed to run, but after investigating the incident and being unable to explain quite what had caused the two previously healthy horses to suddenly keel over and die within moments of each other, the decision was rightly taken in the interests of the horses and human beings at the course to abandon the rest of the card on safety grounds.

How tragic for the two stables concerned having put in so much work and cared so well for their horses, and how unfortunate for Newbury to be struck by such a bizarre, macabre incident. Investigations are continuing.

Owing a Partnership Share In a Thoroughbred Racehorse

Everyone dreams of owning a great racehorse; well almost everybody and ask those who don`t would they like a percentage share of the Derby winner’s prize money and there aren`t too many who would say no. The thoroughbred racing industry is associated with wealth, with glamour and with tales of heroic bravery and defeating the odds. So many times in the history of the sport has a winner had a tale attached to him that befits the making of a movie. Bob Champion and Aldaniti; the diminutive and bad tempered Seabiscuit and of course Pharlap the great New Zealand gelding who`s untimely death in suspicious circumstances rocked a racing nation.

Owning a racehorse is an expensive business. Anyone who has ever undertaken the task alone will vouch for that fact. Racehorses are not cheap to keep and it`s not just the horse and trainer that need looking after it`s the vets, farriers, staff and jockeys that keep the wheels of the machine well oiled and working. But in recent years new hope has appeared on the horizon for the would be racehorse owner in the form of the “Syndicate” or “Racing partnership”. It`s a simple concept. A group of people pay a weekly or monthly amount into an account that pays for the training of a horse. For that each member gets to have the thrill of watching “their” horse in action and experience the excitement of actually being part of a day at the races.

So where do you start looking to become part of this great sport? A simple internet search will reveal many syndicates looking for new members or will at least point you in the right direction. The phone book will give numbers of local trainers. Trainers are an excellent place to start as they may have a horse already owned in partnership that has a spare “leg” for sale.

Getting involved comes in one of two forms. Major syndicates will only ask for a monthly contribution to a horse that is already owned by the company. Smaller partnerships may be looking for a horse to send to a trainer of their choice; this will involve being involved in the purchase of the horse at auction or privately so an upfront contribution will be required. There are even agents out there who will act on the perspective horse owner`s behalf and arrange the joining of a syndicate and “look after” them during their racehorse ownership.

Syndicates or partnerships can be large or small and can take place at any level of the sport. One of the first things to decide is what type of racing you want to be involved with. National Hunt racing does not have the lucrative reward of flat racing but the costs are slightly lower both in entry and training fees. Syndicate members are allowed to visit their horse and watch him or her working on the gallops prior to racing and many become deeply fond of their “horse”.

Watching a horse that you own even partly taking his place in a race is a tremendous thrill. But be warned: it`s not something for the very fainthearted and many syndicate owners become so nervous at the start of the race they are unable to watch. But when the race is over win or lose the party begins and the dreaming starts. One of the biggest thrills of being involved in a horse is backing it to win, horse racing tips will help the onwers keep a weather eye on the opposition.

Peter Cundell Hands In Training Licence

It is sad to learn of the news that the highly respected Compton-based trainer Peter Cundell has saddled his last runner after a career that has spanned the best part of four decades and seen the popular handler achieve some notable successes, writes Elliot Slater.

Cundell saddled his last runner at Kempton Park on January 30 when Having A Ball ran a respectable race to finish a length-and-a-half fourth in a mile handicap. The 62-year-old enjoyed his highest profile victories with the high-class chaser Bachelor’s Hall who landed a unique big-race treble back in 1977 winning the Mackeson Gold Cup at Cheltenham, the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury, and then the Grade 1 King George VI Chase at Kempton’s premier Boxing Day fixture.

The 1980s proved a generally fruitful time for Cundell but in recent years his string has dwindled and, although not stating it publicly, it is believed that he is somewhat disillusioned with the current state of the racing industry and the low levels of prize money being offered for anything other than decent handicaps and pattern races. Fans of horse racing betting will understand his concerns.

A third generation racehorse trainer following his father Ken Cundell and his father’s older cousin Frank Cundell, both of whom also achieved significant successes, Peter Cundell will be the last of the line as far as training racehorses go with his children all having taken other career paths. His horses have all been transferred to the care of Jonny Portman who has been leasing Cundell’s main yard for some time, and the now retired racehorse trainer intends to remain busy managing the turf gallops that he has so successfully cultivated and which have proven a major asset to the training facilities for all handlers in the Berkshire region.

T his post is for all the thousands of Zenyatta fans. I thought it might be a good idea to put together a bunch of all the Zenyatta memorabilia I could find, with links for you to purchase. Also, to immediately set the minds of any skeptics at rest, I pledge that any commission I earn from your purchases will be donated to a reputable horse rescue organization. By David Wyncoop: I was introduced to the Liza G. Fly video about Zenyatta by a Kentucky blood horse consultant. She is not a big country western music fan herself but thought I might like the subject of the video. I am a huge Zenyatta fan. I have the Virginia personal license plates to prove it. Anyway, when I heard/saw the video about Zenyatta I was blown away. I found myself tearing up (I am a “men never cry” guy) and getting goose bumps as I watched and listened. It was the story of “the greatest horse we’ve ever seen” (Liza G. Fly) in a nutshell. I know I can get the audio for my MP3 player but I would really love to have both audio and video on a CD. I rate her effort A+.

There’s nothing more exciting, to many, that spending a day at the track. Even if you don’t have access to a racetrack or a way to watch horse racing on TV, horse betting can yield some great profits. Many horse-wagering individuals have hit the big score with a bet of just $1. Before you can place your bets and start winning, you need to know how to bet. In this article, we will go over some common horse wagering options like the Trifecta, Quinella, Exacta and many more. In just a couple minutes from now, you will be ready to hit the track (even the virtual one) and stake your claim to the world of winning racetrack betting.

Horse Wagering

Win: This option is pretty self-evident. You are betting the horse to win the race. If you are correct, your ticket will be paid the “Win” rate for the horse. This wager is technically called a “Win Bet.”

Place: Sometimes even the best horses finish second and that’s what it means to “place.” If the horse you pick comes in first or second, you are paid the “Place” rate. This wager is technically called a “Place Bet.”

Trifecta (also called a Triple): If you want to win a good deal of cash, potentially, for a small $1 or $2 wager, the Trifecta is for you. When you bet a Trifecta, you are betting on the exact horses that will finish first, second and third. The order matters with this bet. If you are unsure of the order, but just know the three horses that will Win, Place and Show, you can box the bet. When you box a bet, you are betting all possible combinations. There are six combinations to any three-horse Trifecta.

Daily Double: If you have a good eye for picking winners, give the daily double a spin. When you bet the daily double, you are betting on the winner of two consecutive horse races—usually the first and second race of the day.

Pick Six: This bet could be a pick 6,7,8 and so forth. When you place this bet, you pick the winners of all the races. As you can imagine, it has a very nice payoff when you win.

What Is A National Hunt Race? National Hunt racing is a vastly popular class of horse racing in the United Kingdom. It is the formal name for jump racing, where horses have to jump obstacles such as fences or hurdles, and includes steeplechases and hurdle races. Additionally, there are also flat races held at these events. Known as Bumper races, jump horses run these to gain experience running the flat before they start competing in hurdles or chases. They are run under the same rules as National Hunt racing.

What Is The National Hunt Season? Although jump races are held throughout the year in the UK, the authorized National Hunt season opens in mid-October and runs through the end of April. The Charlie Hall Chase is the first significant event of the season, and takes place at the end of October. The season finale race is the Attheraces Gold Cup at Sandown, and occurs in late April.

What Is The Difference Between Steeplechases And Hurdle Races? In a hurdle race, horses run a course that is about 2-3.5 miles in length. Horses jump hurdles, which are at least 3.5 feet tall. These hurdles are not fixed in place. If a horse hits one during a jump, the hurdles will simply tip over.

In a steeplechase (or chase), the stakes are higher for the horse. They must run a 2-4.5 mile course and clear fences that are at least 4.5 feet high. These fences are permanently in place, and if a horse does not clear the fence, they may fall.

Types Of Horses In National Hunt Racing There is not one kind of horse that runs jump races, but on the whole they are usually Thoroughbreds. Most often, horses who compete in National Hunt racing have been bred for either jump racing or flat racing.

How Did National Hunt Racing Begin? The very first National Hunt race on record was in 1752. The towns of Doneraile and Buttevant in County Cork, Ireland, held a competition race in which horses had to run a course marked by the church steeples in each town. One steeple marked the start, and the other marked the finish. The term ‘steeplechase’, although it was not used officially until the start of the 19th century, has its origins in this race.

What Are The Grades And Classes? National Hunt races are graded and classified. The grades are Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Listed, Handicaps and Bumpers. The classes go from 1-7, with 1 being the best. Graded and listed races are Class 1.

Main Events There are two most important events during the National Hunt season. The first is the Cheltenham Festival, a four day event in the second week of March. It has eleven Grade One races, and culminates in the most prestigious chase race in the world, the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The second key event is the Grand National at Aintree. This event goes on for three days in early April.

Who Are The Most Famous Winners? The most famed winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup are Dawn Run, Arkle, Golden Miller, Best Mate and Desert Orchid. At the Grand National, notable winners include Red Rum, Mr. Frisk, Aldaniti and Foinavon.

Training Thoroughbreds Horses

Training thoroughbreds for the racetrack comes with very specific challenges – it’s different from training regular riding horses, and to many people outside of the industry it appears to be an assembly line producing a lot of wild and uncontrollable animals. In reality, thoroughbreds are trained carefully – but quickly – to do a specific job, and most of them do that job pretty well, whether or not they are fast.

Remember that racing stables and studs have a lot of young horses to break in a very short time. And these horses don’t have to know much – they need to accept a rider, go fast, and stop. Later, they’ll need to know how to enter starting stalls, and respond in different ways to a jockeys commands, but for most youngsters, they need to be broken just enough to start training.

Many training stables use natural horsemanship techniques to get these thoroughbreds trained. Natural horsemanship works very well for thoroughbred training; it teaches horses to move forward – which is pretty essential for a racehorse – and to accept a saddle, bridle, and a rider very quickly.

More and more training stables are using round pens and natural horsemanship methods to get their youngsters ready for the track as quickly as possible. The leadership training the horses get in the round pen is valuable when they need to follow a handler into the starting stalls, or if they have to adapt to new surroundings frequently. For many trainers, natural horsemanship training is the method of choice for breaking their horses.

If you’ve just adopted a retired racehorse, think about natural horsemanship for re-training your horse. Much of the groundwork has been done for you – your horse will accept a saddle and bridle and a rider, and will be conditioned to move forward. Really, all you need to do now is add consistency, and control.

For this, remember that the language a racehorse uses, and that it expects from you, is very similar to what you use in natural horsemanship. If you have ever watched the Kentucky Derby or other events in racing’s Triple Crown, you have had the opportunity to see Thoroughbred horses. If you’re not a racing fan, but watch the news on a regular basis – particularly after the 2006 running of the Kentucky Derby and on through the rest of the year, you’re likely familiar with the story of Barbaro, the 2006 Derby winner that was put down after shattering a hind leg during the 2006 Preakness Stakes: the beautiful, calm Thoroughbred Horse was beloved by many.

Many of the reasons why Barbaro was much beloved share similarities with the reason why many people express love and adoration for Thoroughbred horses. The breed is known for a noble beauty, a dignified appearance, a determination, coupled with speed and drive.

Of course, it’s the speed and wildness of the Thoroughbred horse – known widely for its racing abilities – that make Thoroughbreds a less than ideal choice for those who are looking for a horse for their family, as well as for inexperienced riders. Many find that Thoroughbreds are too fast, too unpredictable and dangerous for those who aren’t experienced with horses.

Just how fast can Thoroughbred horses be? On average, Thoroughbreds like those that are used in racing run nearly forty miles per hour, but remain agile, able to turn quickly and change pace without much notice, when necessary. The hindquarters of Thoroughbred horses often are the seat of their power; long, well-developed muscles in the hip and thigh are things that you should pay attention, whether you are picking a horse out of the
line-up in race five or if you are looking to buy a Thoroughbred horse for your own use.

Though the Thoroughbred is uncommon in dressage, it is not unheard of; the same is true for show jumping. Likewise, because Thoroughbred horses move with a smooth gait, some have been used for classical jumping and as show hunters.

The best of the breed are taken one step further and trained for event performance. In event competition, dressage, cross-country and show-jumping is all combined into a single equestrian event. Because of their success in event performance, many Thoroughbred horses make it to World Championship and Olympic competition levels.

This athleticism of the horse and its competitive potential is something that, when one is looking at horses for sale, often puts young Thoroughbred horses out of the price range of many families. When making an investment with two or more partners into buying a Thoroughbred horse for racing, buyers can expect to pay up to $5,000. To own your own Thoroughbred, you’ll need to invest at least $10,000, and understand that you are buying one of the least expensive Thoroughbreds. At this price level, many horse owners are only partial owners of the horse that they have invested their money. Prices only climb from there.

However, those who do own Thoroughbred horses – either on their own or as a part of a partnership – tend to find that there are many rewards. There’s camaraderie among Thoroughbred owners, an excitement that comes from getting together at the track (even if your horse is not the one that ultimately wins the race).

The Emirates Racing Authority was founded in 1990 and on the first running of the Dubai World Cup in 1996 an amazing new track, created on the plans of the Maktoum family was unveiled at Nad Al Sheba. The dream was to build a state-of-the-art racecourse in Dubai which would attract the world’s best racehorses, and this dream most definitely came to pass.

The Dubai World Cup is run every March in Dubai, and is a racing challenge, run over ten furlongs, and has the biggest prizes to match. The race is open to Northern Hemisphere bred four-year-olds and older and Southern Hemisphere bred three-year-olds and older, and participants have come from twelve different countries. Goldolphin, founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, have had five winners of the Dubai World Cup since 1996, have been crowned Champion British Owner on seven occasions, have a 54% ratio of winners to runners, and boast Frankie Dettori as one of their jockeys. This of course all makes perfect sense when you consider the fact it is believed that horse racing became a professional sport in the UK in the 12th century, when the English knights returned from the Crusades with Arab horses. The Arabian Horse, which hails from Middle Eastern deserts, is acknowledged as being the purest and oldest of all horse breeds, and has incredible stamina – being able to carry its rider at speed across miles of open desert with little food or water. Today, almost every breed and type of horse has traces of Arab blood and all English Thoroughbreds that are used in horseracing in the UK today are descended from three Arabian stallions: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian or Godolphin Arabian, which were imported to Britain in the late 17th and early 18th century.

For more than two decades, horse owners and breeders from the Arab world have worked to establish the Arab presence in international thoroughbred racing, and with the development of the Dubai World Cup have established themselves as one of the world’s top racing challenges. In a little over a decade they have created one of the highlights of the international racing calendar. Placement in the race is by invite only, and anyone invited naturally turns up as the top prize is $6 million, but the lure is not just in the prize money – the horsemen get generous subsidies for supporting horseracing in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai enjoys a formidable reputation due to its quality, generosity, and sunshine, and has become a mecca for both horse enthusiasts and tourists alike with 50,000 racegoers attending the Dubai World Cup meeting each year.

The Nad Al Sheba racecourse held the Dubai World Cup for the last time in 2009 as their new racetrack Meydan will host the 2010 Dubai World Cup and its associated races next March. A Healthy Horse Stall

Many horses spend much of their time in their stalls, so it is imperative for us to ensure that we provide the best stall possible. Horses that spend a lot of time in an indoor stall will need to be given the most attention in terms of cleaning and keeping the stall safe for them.

If you have large breed horses, such as Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses or Warmbloods you may want to go with a stall that is 16×16. These stalls are often referred to as stallion and foaling stalls. Ponies will not need any more than a 10×10 stall. Moderate size horses will do well with a 12×12 stall.

The dividers between your horse’s stall and the next stall need to be made of a heavy material. Most stalls are constructed of two-inch plans that go up to about five feet or so. Another divider should be placed so that the horses can see each other but not necessarily make contact. The same is true for the front of the stall. Stall doors may have gates that swing open so that the horses can stick their heads out into the barn aisle.

Watch the latch on the door. It is not uncommon for a horse to figure out their stall door latch and easily let themselves out. If your horse figures out his latch you will also want to place a chain with a simple clip that the horse cannot undo. Never padlock a horse in stall, as you may not be there to release the horse in the case of a fire or other emergency.

It is important that the stall be very well ventilated. Horses can produce a lot of heat from their bodies and a poorly ventilated stall may cause bacterial growth in the walls, sickness, respiratory problems and bad smells.

Horses do like to lie down and sleep at night and they will do so, if they feel safe and comfortable in their stall. They have to take a load off of their limbs during the night, so you need to be sure that the horse has enough room to lie down. Sometimes horses will lie down but not leave themselves enough room to get back up – this is know in the horse world as being ‘cast’. When a horse is cast they may thrash about and panic because they can’t get enough room to leverage themselves back on their feet. You will need to get in the stall and assist the horse in getting back on it’s feet – be careful even a quite horse may be scared and lash out in fright.

Most complexes use shavings as bedding for horses. Many people will put several wheelbarrow loads of shavings in their stall for their horse, but this is not necessarily good. If you have too much bedding then your horse’s legs can become weak due to the lack of contact with the ground. Bones need to be stressed and concussed by the ground in order to maintain their strength. You want to have just enough bedding that the horse can still feel the ground, but the bedding will also absorb urine.

Dublin: An Ideal Base To Enjoy Irish Horseracing

The Irish love their horse racing, and one of the best places any horseracing fan – Irish or otherwise – can go to sample the Sport of Kings is Dublin. A day at the races is an excellent day out, even for non-fans of the sport, due to the atmosphere the sport generates.

There are five racecourses situated in and around Dublin, hosting both National Hunt and Flat race meetings, so no matter what time of year you visit the city, you’re almost assured to find a race meeting taking place at one of the tracks.

The Curragh is one of the oldest racecourses in the Emerald Isle and the name ‘Curragh’ is actually the Gaelic name for racecourse. Situated around 30 miles from Dublin in County Kildare, there is a train and bus service to the track on racedays. The Curragh is a high-profile track and hosts the majority of the major Flat races on the Irish racing calendar, including the Irish classics.

Fairyhouse, situated about 12 miles from Dublin in County Meath, hosts the Irish Grand National and has been racing since 1848. The track has had racing luminaries such as Arkle, Desert Orchid, Captain Christy, Persian War and more recently Istabraq and Florida Pearl among its visitors. It continues to attract the best horses across Ireland and the rest of the UK to compete over the near- two-mile course.

Leopardstown racecourse is home to 22 race meetings throughout the year, with both National Hunt and Flat race meetings on the agenda. Leopardstown is actually situated within the city environs, around 12 miles from the city-centre. The course has staged racing since 1888 and like Fairyhouse attracts some of the racing game’s biggest names thanks to a host of high-profile meetings, including the Lexus Chase, Irish Champion Hurdle and Irish Hennessy Gold Cup over the sticks, and the Irish Champion Stakes and many of the Irish Classic Trials over the Flat.

Naas racecourse can be found some 25 miles from Dublin city, in County Kildare. Perhaps less well-known than its more famous neighbours, Naas is nevertheless a high quality racecourse and is another to mix both National Hunt and Flat racing throughout its calendar.

Punchestown is also situated in County Kildare, around a 30 minute drive from Dublin city and is one of the best known racecourses in the British Isles. Punchestown is exclusively a National Hunt track and is often considered the spiritual home of Irish National Hunt racing. The course has been racing since 1824 and has consistently attracted the best racehorses to compete, with the highlight being the five-day Punchestown festival, held in late-April.

Despite numbering in the hundreds, it won’t be surprising to learn that hotels in Dublin are often in high demand whenever horseracing comes to the region, but with five top racecourses in proximity to the city it should be possible to find accommodation for the race meeting of your choice.

And of course, you’ll be able to spend your winnings garnered from your day at the races in the wide selection of bars and restaurants that can be found throughout Dublin’s streets.

Horses Can’t Do That!

I’ve been hearing that a lot lately: “Horses can’t do that!” My seventeen year old rescued off-the-track Thoroughbred Lukas is listed on both Yahoo and Google as “The World’s Smartest Horse,” and has attracted world-wide media attention for his cognitive and perceptive abilities. In addition, he performs a wide variety of liberty (free) movements and tricks. All to show the happy results of kind training and how smart and wonderful animals are.

Lukas (race name “Just Ask Mike”) ran in three races as a two year old: back of the pack finishes and two bowed tendons unceremoniously ended his race-track career. He changed hands several times, ending up neglected and emaciated in a yard belonging to a family who didn’t know how to care for him (or even what to feed him). A local jumper trainer noticed him while she was driving by and bought the then eight year old gelding out of pity: “He was skin and bones and his tail was a solid bat of dried mud.” She had hoped to rehabilitate him and eventually include him in her amateur jumping program. After two years though, he still “wasn’t fitting in,” according to her, and I found him advertised in the local Horsetrader as a “Green project horse.”

I immediately like his big, kind eye and thoughtful gaze, and after visiting him once more the next day, purchased him. Lukas’ extremely sensitive nature was soon going to become very obvious. I enlisted the help of a trainer to prepare Lukas for lower-level Dressage competition. Within a short time, Lukas reacted in dangerous and resistive ways: bucking, spooking and bolting. After discontinuing the trainer, I decided to train him myself and hopefully reclaim his trust.

I use a combination of shaping, clicker training and positive reinforcement along with intermediary markers to signal correct inclinations. As a psychiatric nurse for twenty-five years, I’ve borrowed behavior modification techniques from my career, and bits and pieces from over thirty years of studying every type of training from birds, zoo animals, dogs and marine mammals.

I started with face and neck tricks and progressed to more complex movements and behaviors. Lukas’ curious, eager nature sparked an exploration into cognitive and perceptual tasks as well. His current repertoire includes: the smile, pose, yes, no, kiss (dry and wet), fetch, blindfold, catch, yawn, wave, pedestal work, Spanish Walk (forward and backward), stay and come, jambet (three-legged pivot), reverence, passage, bow, crossing his front legs, lay down (and I sit on him), feet together (front and back), hide and seek, acting lame, pushing a cart and rearing. In addition, he spells, counts, identifies shapes, discriminates colors, and understands the concepts of spatial relationships, object permanence, proportion, same/different, and his newest: absentness.

To date Lukas has been on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, HLN, Equisearch, Equine VIP, Pet Life Radio, RFD-Radio and the Associated Press released a feature story about him. He has been in countless magazines, newsletters, forums, blogs on-line sites and newspapers. He is the Spokeshorse for TROTT (Training Racehorses Off The Track) and is the poster-boy for the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Also, he is associated with HEAL (Human Equine Alliances for Learning), a therapy practice in Chehalis, Washington, that assists trauma victims.

Lukas’ purpose continues to be to show the happy results of kind training and that animals are smart and have emotions. Horses can do all that – they just need to be taught in a way that they understand.

The number of horses for sale has grown in size, largely due to economic slow down. Owners simply cannot afford to keep these expensive animals. Many horses end up in shelters simply because their owners can no longer afford to keep them. Even high-priced and well-trained show horses are selling for a small amount of what they used to sell for.

Horses in every breed, and trained for any riding style, can easily be found. Price levels vary widely as well. Individuals must still be very cautious when purchasing this type of animal. It is an investment of sorts. Numerous issues should be considered during the decision process. In addition, many different sales sources are available to assist the buyer in finding the right horse.

A potential buyer should decide specifically what he or she intends to use the horse for. This streamlines the purchase process, making it easier to select the right animal. Most horses cannot be utilized for all purposes, simply because they lack the training. Their body type may only be suited for specific uses. For example, a draft horse would not be effective at herding cattle. A thoroughbred racehorse fresh from the race track would not make a good child\’s horse.

There are a multitude of resources for finding a horse. Many websites exist that list horses for sale, across riding disciplines, by breed, and by geographic location. Most of these sites reach a worldwide pool of buyers and sellers. Most sites allow the seller to upload photos, which really helps the buyer narrow down the list of possible candidates for purchase. The potential buyer can usually sort prospects by price, breed or riding discipline. This is an excellent way to find horses quickly, do preliminary research on just what is available, as well as determine corresponding price ranges.

More traditional search methods also exist. Auctions usually sell horses at bargain prices, and are held on a regular basis. Horses should be purchased at auction only by those with extensive horse knowledge. Breeders and trainers are also very good resources. Breeders usually sell the animals that they have bred and raised. Trainers may or may not be in the business of selling horses, but have a lot of connections to sellers in the horse world. Breed associations usually list horses for sale in the classified sections of their newsletters or magazines.

When visiting a prospect, bring a knowledgeable and trusted friend, colleague or trainer. Trainers charge a small fee for assisting in the search for a horse. This is worth the cost in order to find a good horse. Get either the trainer or the second person to ride the horse. Review the animal\’s ground manners as well. All of this provides good information regarding the horse\’s training and attitude.

Veterinary examinations are usually recommended. However the effectiveness of such an examination is somewhat controversial. Nevertheless, a complete stress test should be conducted. This helps to identify lameness issues. Some people believe that x-rays should be included in the exam, to thoroughly screen for any lameness issues. On the other hand, x-rays in older horses will usually show some sort of bone abnormality that may or may not cause lameness in the future.

A pre-purchase veterinary exam is recommended. This should include a complete stress test to rule out lameness. Some people like to have x-rays taken, but the efficacy of performing such a procedure is somewhat questionable. Certain individuals feel that x-rays are necessary to determine if there are any developing leg abnormalities. Others feel x-rays may falsely reveal issues that really are not problems.

Well bred filly Vivacious won the first two-year-old race of the season at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart yesterday to signal her arrival as a potential star.

Vivacious (West Quest-Entally) is a full sister to former top class sprinting mare Reunification and talented middle distance performer National Trust.

The filly began well and raced outside of the leader Clan McLeod (Savoire Vivre-Starred) and they matched motors to the home turn with Destiana (Invincible Spirit-Begum) closing in after trailing the pair.

Vivacious’s rider Brendon McCoull became anxious on the home turn but the filly responded and drew alongside Clan McLeod and eventually gained the upper hand and went on to score by a half-length from Clan McLeod with Destiana over two lengths astern.

Trainer Barry Campbell was calm and reserved after the race but admitted the filly was a potential star from the day she first took to the bridle.

“The dam (Entally) is a marvel isn’t she? That’s her third foal and they’ve all won and showed good stuff from day one,” Campbell said.

“It takes a good one to travel over four hours in a float to the races and win at first look at a track and she’s done it without having to be fully extended.”

“That’s as good a win as you’ll see by a two-year-old given the circumstances,” he said.

McCoull was equally as impressed.

“She is such a natural. She had a bit of a stargaze at a few things today but in the end she did what she had to do to win. It was impressive,” McCoull said.

The filly is owned and raced by Richard and Miranda Foster and John and Judy Kingston in partnership with the trainer’s wife Anne Campbell.

“We had a lot of success with this filly’s sister Reunification and now that she’s been sold and retired to stud this filly is a very nice replacement,” Mrs Foster said.

Campbell said Vivacious is unlikely to contest the Alexandra Plate in Hobart in a fortnight and is more likely to be kept for the Alfa Bowl in Launceston on November 22.

A stud deal for crack sprinter Nicconi has been completed on the eve of his departure for England.
Widden Stud has completed the acquisition of Nicconi , who is booked to be flown from Melbourbne to the UK on Wednesday to compete in Group One races at Royal Ascot and Newmarket.
His first mission is the G1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June 15.
The Lightning Stakes winner is a brilliant first-up performer over the King’s Stand Stakes distance of 1000 metres with his trainer David Hayes confident he will go close to emulating the success of past Astralian sprinters at Royal Ascot.

Choisir, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast all won the prestigious King’s Stand over five furlongs.
“He’s unbeaten first-up, unbeaten at 1000m and dynamic in straight races,” Hayes said.
“I’ve never had a runner at Royal Ascot because I’ve waited until I had the right horse – I firmly believe Nicconi is the right horse.
“He’s the best sprinter I have ever trained and one of the best looking stallions to come out of Lindsay Park.”
A half-brother by Group One producing sire Bianconi to five time Group One winner Niconero, Nicconi has been brilliant from day one, winning his debut as a two year old at Sandown over 1000 metres by three lengths in a blistering 56.84 seconds.

“As a Group One winning three year old against older company and a brilliant winner of the Group One Lightning Stakes just like General Nediym, we firmly believe Nicconi will be a more than suitable replacement. Horses with this type of speed rarely fail,” said Thompson.
Widden Stud has set his fee for next spring at $20,000 plus GST although his fee could be subject to change dependent on his performance at Royal Ascot.

York Racecourse’s James Brennan Looking To Go One Better This Year

Beating the record-breaking 2009 season is the challenge for York Racecourse this year, as head of marketing and sponsorship James Brennan tells STEVE CARROLL.

THEY could not have asked for a better year. Record crowds, two massive Saturday meetings, and the world’s best racehorse Sea The Stars capping the campaign with a fabulous Juddmonte International victory.

That’s the focus for the team at York Racecourse as they begin to gear up for their 17-day season on Knavesmire, which starts on May 12 with the three-day Dante Festival.

With Royal Ascot at York, the St Leger Festival and a four-day York Ebor Festival in the bank over the past half-dozen years, the feeling of “looking to go one better” is hardly new.

And, if anything, they relish the challenge.

“You always have to keep moving forward,” says James Brennan, York’s head of marketing and sponsorship. “2009 was a fantastic season, particularly coming after the disappointments of 2008.

“It was fantastic to see the trackwork project up and running and meet with approval from so many better judges than me. It was fantastic to see the world’s best racehorse Sea The Stars – the crowd really welcomed him back as a true champion, not just a winning favourite.

“It’s important to us that people come and support us and we are grateful for that because it all gets reinvested back into racing at York whether it is boosting prize money or capping attendance fees. It can only come on the back of people’s support and we are conscious of the need to keep earning that.”

The off-season saw York picking up gong after gong. They were hailed by the Racegoers Club, named the country’s top Flat course by the Racehorse Owners’ Association and their groundstaff were also praised with an industry award.

This year, the four-day Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival, running from Tuesday, August 17 to Friday, August 20, remains the ace in York’s pack, with the Juddmonte International, totesport Ebor, Darley Yorkshire Oaks and Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes the feature contests.

World Cup action should be a highlight of the 40th Charity Day, on Saturday, June 12, with England kicking off their challenge for the trophy against the USA following a meeting which has raised more than £4.7 million for cancer charities. Brennan reckons there is much to look forward to.

“It will be great to be coming back racing,” he added. “We are looking forward to seeing Madness perform. There’s always a buzz going into the season and you will start hearing talk about the St Nicholas Abbeys and the other horses that are set to come and run in May and will come back to us again in August.

“The experience of 2009 for most of the 80,000 people who attended the first four-day Ebor Festival was a positive one and we will come on for the run, as they say.

“You wouldn’t work at a racecourse without looking forward to the season. Every year, we have had some different things to do. It’s a great industry to be involved in on racedays.

“There is a real pride when the alarm clock goes off, you come in and the place is waking up. By the time racegoers and horses arrive it is a buzz. We will make sure we are ready.”

Gastric Ulcer in Racehorses

Most recent studies have discovered a much higher incidence of stomach ulceration in performance horses then it was earlier recognized. In spite of the gastric lesions only some of the horses will develop actual stomach ulcer.

According to clinical and Para clinical studies, older or more time trained horses are more susceptible to make stomach ulcer. First clinical symptoms are loss of weight, low appetite and bad physical performances.

In order to establish a certain diagnosis, the veterinarian must perform an endoscopy of the horse stomach; the procedure requires a three meter long endoscope.

As forage feeders, horses secrete hydrochloric acid continuously in the wild and with few higher peaks in horse stables; as they usually graze 24 hours a day, the lack of food between meals in captivity can easily lead to ulcerations. The high amount of HCl in the stomach is believed to be causing ulcer.

While eating, salivary glands secrete bicarbonate-rich saliva which like food itself tends to tamponate the excess of acid. During the lack of food supplies acid levels increase again and harass the gastric mucous membrane produced by mucous glands for protection.

Best managerial solution is to allow the horses a 24 hours access to hay between grain meals. Depending on the season horses are fed in stables with meadow, Lucerne, long stick oat hay, or they are let free to pasture. In spite of the care-takers reservations, full-time access to hay did not disturb the horses’ appetite for grains. This strategy has shown less clinical manifestations of gastric problems and less worries for the owner.

24 hours right to use hay in stables, has also proven a decrease of several problems in the behavior of horses in captivity.

Controlling the use of oral corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as phenylbutazone might also be useful as they inhibit the formation of PGE in the stomach. Prostaglandins suppress the production of HCl, increase the blood flow in the mucous layer of the stomach and moderate the secretion of bicarbonate and mucus. Prostaglandins also have the assent to protect the stomach from any kind of physical or chemical aggression.

In first line therapy treatments aspire to reducing the secretion of hydrochloric acid and its effects. Lately only Omeprazole and Ranitidine are accepted by veterinarian associations in treating horses.

Both Omeprazole and Ranitidine are considered to be prohibited before horse racing because of their drug-like properties. Medical treatments containing the two substances may only be made under veterinarian supervision; treatment schedule must always be registered in the stable diary.

Great Racehorses Of The Thirties

The 1920s, to hear some historians tell it, were one big party – at least for the luckier part of the population, the folks listed in the Social Registry, the partygoers who found themselves fictionalized in the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the descendants of the robber barons of the Gilded Age. But all that partying brought on a painful hangover: the stock market crash of October 29, 1929, and the ten years of economic downturn that followed.

As always, people looked to popular culture, and especially to sports, for escape, distraction, even for symbols of hope, and the great Thoroughbred race horses of the 1930s rose to the occasion.

Equipoise

One of the first horse-racing stars of the 1930s, Equipoise (1928-1938) first attracted notice with his Keene Memorial Stakes win at Belmont Park in 1930. Unlikely victories were Equipoise’s specialty – he was late out of the gate at the Pimlico Futurity that year, even leaving two of his shoes behind in his rush to catch up, but still beating out Twenty Grand and Mate for a first-place finish. He returned from injury after a hoof crack ended his two-year-old season and severely curtailed his three-year-old season (in which he raced only three times); his four-year-old season saw wins at the Metropolitan Handicap, Stars and Stripes Handicap and the Whitney Stakes, plus a world mile record.

Continuing hoof problems shortened a brilliant career, but his son Shut Out came within a hairsbreadth of a 1942 Triple Crown victory (he won Kentucky and Belmont), rendering a fitting tribute to this horse’s bloodied-but-unbowed greatness.

Seabiscuit & War Admiral

The history of horse racing during this period can, in part, be told as the story of Man O’War’s descendants.

Of no one is that more true than of Seabiscuit, grandson of that legendary Thoroughbred and son of Man O’War’s talented but excessively ornery offspring Hard Tack (for whom Seabiscuit was named – Seabiscuit being another name for the tough bread known as hardtack). Initially scrawny and lazy, Seabiscuit changed hands several times and posted a solid but unremarkable three-year season (five wins out of thirty-five starts), but under owner Charles S. Howard and trainer Tom Smith the horse developed a fierce will to win that would make him both lucrative and, for spectators, inspiring.

With steadily increasing imposts, Seabiscuit still managed a run of five stakes wins during the summer of 1937, even after a devastating early-season loss to rival Rosemont (due to jockey Red Pollard’s never-admitted blindness in one eye, which caused him not to see Rosement creeping up in the home stretch).

He finished the year with 11 wins out of 15 races, and was the most lucrative horse on the track for this sixth year of the Depression; the horse’s up-then-down-but-never-out record captured the American imagination (and, consequently, earned boatloads of money for owner Howard, a savvy merchandiser). All was set for the match of the century – between Seabiscuit and his uncle War Admiral, another Man O’War descendant and the previous year’s Triple Crown winner.

A star with East Coast racing fans (just as Seabiscuit’s most fanatical following could be found in and around California), War Admiral, who matched his famous father in temperament (touchy, to say the least) but not in size (War Admiral was smaller and more compact than Man O’War, though he is played in the 2003 movie Seabiscuit by a Clydesdale-sized bruiser), won not only 21 of 26 starts during 1937, but spent the early part of 1938 winning major races up and down the East Coast.

Thus an Ali-vs.-Frazier, Superman-meets-Batman level of hype greeted the matchup between the two, which took place on November 1, 1938, at a packed (40,000 spectators) Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral entered the race heavily favored, with 1-4 odds and heavy press support. After all, not only was his record more consistent, he had a lightning-fast start (all-important in a head-to-head race) and good health.

But trainer Tom Smith had a trick card up his sleeve – he’d been secretly training the usually smooth-beginning, strong-finishing horse to explode from the gate. Seabiscuit took an early lead, which War Admiral ate into and even, for a brief period, erased, before a blazing finish took Seabiscuit to a four-length victory over 1937′s Horse of the Year.

Just when no greater accomplishment seemed possible for this legendary horse, Seabiscuit spent the years 1939-40 recovering from an injury some had deemed career-ending – this time with his original jockey Red Pollard in the saddle. (Pollard had had to give up Seabiscuit’s reins to George Woolf after a near-fatal 1938 accident.) In 1940 the once-injured horse and returned-from-the-brink-of-failure jockey won the Hundred Grander stakes race, the only major stakes race for horses in Seabiscuit’s age range that the horse had not yet won.

He sired 108 foals in his well-deserved retirement. But as befits a legend, Seabiscuit’s gravesite is a secret – only the Howard family knows where his corpse is buried. Meanwhile, the horse’s impact on American hopes was celebrated in the 1949 movie The Story of Seabiscuit (starring Shirley Temple), in Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling 2001 book, and the Oscar-nominated film of 2003 that Hillenbrand inspired.

Ever wondered what happens to horses when they severely damage their tendons with what seem to be career-ending injuries? Sportspeople with tendon injuries have already been in touch with Greg McGarrell, who owns MedCell, in order to offer themselves as test cases for the pioneering treatment and of course UK Sport would absolutely love the technology to be available in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. While it all sounds like something that could only happen way off in the future, it is looking likely that it could be ready for human application in as little as twelve months time – the only thing lacking at the moment, as is quite often the case for scientific development, is the funding to go ahead with the clinical trials.

So this year when watching both the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National be aware that some of the horses competing may have been on their last legs not long before the intervention of McGarrell and his team – we have a lot to be grateful to them for!

Red Rum: The Legendary Racehorse Who Stole Our Hearts

In the history of horse racing, few horses have captured the affection of audiences like Red Rum. The spirited horse rose from an early life of anonymity to become the only three-time Grand National winner. Today, three decades after his retirement, he is still one of the best-known and most beloved racehorses of all time.

The Early Years

Red Rum was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland in 1965. He was passed around to several owners before being purchased for Noel Le Mar. The agent who made the purchase was the now-legendary horse trainer Donald “Ginger” McCain.

It wasn’t apparent at the time, but Red Rum was saddled with a debilitating bone disease in his foot. For many horses (and many trainers) this would mean the end of a racing career before it even began. For Ginger and Red Rum, though, it was just an obstacle to greatness that had to be overcome.

Ginger McCain trained Red Rum in the sand and shallow waters at Southport in Merseyside. This routine is often said to be the reason that “Rummy” was able to overcome his disability and race on a world-class level.

His Legendary Career

Red Rum had a flat racing pedigree, making him more genetically suited to racing short, straight distances. However, Rummy’s true talent came out in steeplechases. His power, speed and jumping ability carried him to his first Grand National title in 1973. The very next year, Red Rum returned to take his second title. He was the first horse to take consecutive firsts since Reynoldstown in 1935-1936. Red Rum’s spirit and grace had already begun to charm the leagues of Grand National fans.

In the following two years, Red Rum lost out on the title, coming in second both times. When he returned in 1977 to try again, he was largely regarded as past his prime. He was 12 years old and not expected to place highly. He surprised sporting fans around the world when he came in a remarkable 25 lengths ahead of the nearest horse, taking his third Grand National win. To this day, Red Rum’s third win is known as one of the greatest moments in horse racing history.

Red Rum’s career included many wins other than his Grand National Victories. Most notably, he won the Scottish Grand National just three weeks after his 1973 Grand National win. To date, he is the only horse to have taken first in both races consecutively.

Retirement and Beyond

Red Rum was headed for the Grand National once again in 1978 but suffered a hairline fracture in one of his heels shortly before the race. He was retired soon after, but his public life and notoriety by no means diminished with the end of his career. Red Rum was a national celebrity by this time and traveled all over the country for various engagements. He often led pre-race parades at Aintree and was a popular guest at charity benefits and public events.

When Red Rum died on October 18, 1995, his remains were lovingly buried at the winning post at Aintree Racecourse. Ginger McCain, the trainer who led this remarkable horse to his life of victory, said that the burial place was perfect. He reported that he was comforted by the thought of all future winning horses racing over Red Rum on the way to their own victories.

The implications of superficial digital flexor tendonitis in the National Hunt racehorse

Every time the horses hoof comes into contact with the ground, the tendon is required to stretch. At speed or over jumps this is increased up to 8cm, (Nankervis 2002). The tenocytes within the extra cellular matrix run parallel to one another. The ability to aid cell realignment will aid the functional capabilities of the tendon after injury.

Tendon elasticity and its ability to function as an energy efficient spring, is vital for optimum performance in the National Hunt racehorse. Tendonitis can be caused by a trauma or by the repetitive overloading, for example a galloping horse, of the flexor tendons in the caudal aspect of the distal limb. Inflammation can be acute or chronic, both resulting in the horse not being sound for exercise. Signs of tendonitis include swelling, pain, and lameness. The ability to offer immediate first aid can influence the prognosis for future performance, as tendonitis is a potentially serious career compromising disease, (Palmer et al; 1994) first aid should be offered immediately to enhance the rate and quality of repair (www.merckvetmanual.com). The horse should be removed from work to prevent any additional, potentially damaging, overloading of the limb. Healing rates for tendon injuries will vary dependant on severity.

A survey carried out by Hertsch et al claimed that 78% of all horses treated returned to work within 4 – 6 months. This trial did not record lesion size or severity. The need for this continual rehabilitation of tendons is crucial for the horse and their ability to return to racing. Tendons require rest to remodel but exercise in order to retain their elastic qualities.

Despite treatment, tendon repair is prolonged in horses and the composition, structure and function of the mature repair tissue may never equal that of an uninjured tendon, (Heinninger; 1994). The potential for re-injury is much greater once a tendon injury has been sustained, (Heinninger; 1994) which can, if the management and approach to future performance is not sympathetic to this, cause major compromise to the future career of the National Hunt racehorse.

Coming from behind in a blistering kick, Native Dancer offered just the kind of suspense-packed, last-minute victories that are guaranteed to thrill a crowd, plus all the new fans watching at home on their TVs – and to provide sports reporters with just the dramatic hook they need. For all these reasons, he was the subject of inevitable hype and obsessive media attention during the months leading up to the 1953 Kentucky Derby. Here, sadly enough, Native Dancer’s lossless streak snapped, with the repeatedly-fouled horse barely edged out by Dark Star.

But Native Dancer consoled himself (as well as his owners and, one may imagine, investors) with back-to-back wins at the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, as well as at every other race he entered that year.

The horse’s brilliant career ended on this high note; he won the three races he entered in 1954, and was to compete in France’s Prix de la Arc de Triomphe, but a recurring foot injury sidelined him – as it turned out, permanently. In 1954, the year of his retirement, he appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, joining James Joyce, Reinhold Niebuhr and Adolph Hitler in Luce-magazine immortality.

Tom Fool

This goofily-named bay colt from the prestigious Greentree Stables of Lexington, KY, followed in his parents’ footsteps in being named oddly: his sire was Menow (say it slowly?) and his mare, Gaga. But his two-year-old racing season was no joke; he had five wins out of seven starts and earned the designation of Champion 2-Year-Old Colt for 1951.

Such an impressive debut ensured that Tom Fool entered his three-year-old season under public scrutiny, but an examination following his second-place finish at the Wood Memorial Stakes found that he’d been feverish for some time, running in the face of sickness. He didn’t race for two months that year, but eventually returned to the track to finish out this three-year-old season, in which he managed to win a majority of races despite illness and a resulting interruption in training.

In 1953, he shone. Tom Fool won each of the ten races he entered that year, including the entirety of New York’s Handicap Triple, a feat only two horses had accomplished to that point. He won at the Whitney Stakes and – a special victory – is final race, the Pimlico Special, and was voted the Eclipse Horse of the Year.

Gallant Man

This one’s a heartbreaker. One of the great blunders in sports history took place on this blindingly fast Irish stallion’s back, when, in his three-year-old racing season, jockey Bill Shoemaker gave up a near-certain Kentucky Derby win by standing up a moment too early in his stirrups. (He thought he’d already won the race.) Gallant Man slowed just enough to let Iron Liege, ridden by legendary jockey Bill Hartack, to nose past him to a win.

But though this pride-goeth-before-a-fall moment is often cited among racing fans as one of the worst tactical mistakes in the history of Thoroughbred horse racing, Gallant Man led a brilliant career both before and after, more than deserving his place in the US Racing Hall of Fame and his thirty-sixth spot on Blood-Horse Magazine’s Top 100 Racehorses of the Twentieth Century list. Just weeks after that heartbreaking Derby, Gallant Man destroyed a tough field at the Belmont Stakes, beating even Bold Ruler (that year’s Horse of the Year) and setting track records not broken until Secretariat’s 1973 victory.

Suffering chronically from bad ankles, and physically small (standing a little over fifteen hands), Gallant Man (named after a horse in a movie) won three prestigious handicap races before being put to stud in 1958. There, he sired 52 stakes winners. Not bad for a horse best remembered for a jockey’s error.

The Thoroughbred is also known as the Thoroughbred Racehorse even though that is not their only use. While they have historically been bred for racing, their 16 to 17.3 hand height and long legs allow them to excel at jumping and their graceful ways of moving helps the breed to excel at most of the English disciplines such as equitation and dressage.

The Thoroughbred breed includes some of the most valuable animals in the world. In 1985 an untested yearling colt named Seattle Dancer was sold at auction for the record price of $13.1 million just on the basis of his pedigree.

The Thoroughbred pedigree dates back to the late 1600s and may be the oldest recorded pedigree for any animal population. One of the earliest formal registries was the General Stud Book for Thoroughbreds that began in 1791. It shows that the breed descended from a group of English-bred horses whose ancestry can be traced back to three foundation stallions: the Darley Arabian owned by Thomas Darley (1703); the Godolphin Arabian “Barb” owned by Lord Godolphin (1730); and the Byerly Turk owned by Captain Robert Byerly (1683). These three stallions were imported to England from North Africa and the Middle East around the turn of the 17th century and were bred to the strong, locally available native English mares.

The Jockey Club took over the General Stud Book in 1896 and is the official registry for Thoroughbreds. The JC manages one of the most sophisticated computer operations in the country for tracking race results world-wide. Its database holds the names of more than 1.8 million horses in a master pedigree file which trace back to the late 1800′s.

According to the pedigree records, the overall foundation stock numbered only 80 horses, with 21 of those contributing a total 80% of the pedigree for modern Thoroughbred horses. Only 10 horses have contributed over 50% of the genes in the current generation of Thoroughbreds and four of those horses appear in the bloodlines of over 30% of modern Thoroughbreds. With such a small gene pool, genetic problems associated with inbreeding are generally expected. However, this does not appear to be the case in the Thoroughbred.

Now, as a result of three centuries of careful selection, Thoroughbred racehorses are the fastest horses in the world over distances of 1-1.75 miles. They have been bred to carry more than 1000 to 1300 pounds of their own body weight over extended distances, galloping at speeds of 35-40 miles per hour, yet still have the agility to respond to changes of pace or direction as dictated by the rider.

The gallop is the most natural gait for the Thoroughbred and the breed canters in a gallop called running. The feet move in a four-beat gait, and before the beat begins again, just for an instant, all four feet are off the ground and the horse is airborne for that single second before he begins the gait pattern again. Patience, training, and breeding can help instill pacing and trotting gaits, as well as other desirable motions.

Thoroughbreds are officially recognized in the colors of bay, black, chestnut, dark bay, dark brown, white, gray, roan, and palomino. The head should be proportional to the rest of the body, with a flat forehead and wide-set intelligent eyes. The head, which is carried relatively low, should sit well on a neck that is longer and lighter than in other breeds. The shoulder should be deep, well-muscled and sloped along the same parallel as that on which the head is carried. When seen from behind or from the front, the legs should be straight and move smoothly in unison through a single plane.

The Thoroughbred is one of the 5 “hot-blooded” horses in terms of temperament, which means they have more sensitivity and energy. But being high-strung gives the Thoroughbreds an edge that helps them compete successfully as race horses. Hot bloods have high intelligence that allows them to be athletic, versatile, and to learn quickly. They have agility and speed and are generally considered spirited and bold. They tend to have long legs and a slim build and are more physically refined than other breeds. Some pedigree lines of Thoroughbred are known to be temperamental, if not hot-headed, while others are equally known for their level-headedness.

All Thoroughbreds are given an official birthday of January 1st to keep the age groups easily defined for racing, regardless of the actual date of birth of the foal. They must be registered with the Jockey Club within a year of the actual birth date and must be DNA tested to prove their parentage. Additionally, a horse must be named by February of its 2-year-old year, but even that can be a challenge, since the owner must submit 6 names and it is the Jockey Club that will decide which name they can have.

In addition to DNA, “night-eyes”: or “chestnuts”, may be required for identification. These are horny, irregular growths that are found on the inside of a horse’s legs. They are just above the knees on the front legs and they are near the rear of the hock on the rear legs. These chestnuts are like human fingerprints since no two horses have been found to have the same set of these growths. Additionally, since they do not change in size or shape throughout the life of an adult horse they are extremely useful in animal identification. The Jockey Club often asks for a set of night-eye photos to assist in the identification of horses that have no white markings or for identifying gray/roans.

An expert on biomechanics of the horse once noted that if there is a limit on the Thoroughbred’s performance, it may be on the ability of the horse to remain sound in the face of the tremendous physical stresses of racing.

Thoroughbred horse racing is something that some of us have are familiar with, mainly because of the three biggest Thoroughbred horse races shown on TV each year. These three are the Preakness, the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Derby, known as the Thoroughbred Triple Crown. All three of the Triple Crown races are run on a flat dirt track.

The horses involved in these races tend to pace themselves during most of the race. They save that final surge of power for the very end, the grand finish! There are even a few horses that are so incredibly fast that they surge from start to finish, never letting up for a second. They begin and the lead and end up winning.

Many spectators of these races do not realize is that this is only one type of Thoroughbred horse racing. Even so, these are the most popular though. Not to say that the other types of Thoroughbred horse races are not popular, because they are. A variation on Thoroughbred racing is turf racing. The difference is that these races and other Thoroughbred races is that they are run on grass rather than dirt, though everything else about the races remains the same.

The turf courses are the same length as the dirt track races and the thoroughbreds run the same distances as in other types of Thoroughbred racing. The only difference is the turf and the terminology which is used in these sorts of Thoroughbred races. In these races there are different words used that describes various aspects of the sport. One type of race would say that the horse was fast but in a turf competition they would say firm instead.

Thoroughbred racing often have situations where the horses actually have to face hurdles such as jumping fences and such. These races are called steeplechases and their purpose is to offer extra challenges to the rider and the horse. For the spectators it offers an extra element of excitement. Thoroughbreds bank on speed while racing as they race only on flat race courses.

Horses that race in steeplechases must rely on stamina in order to finish the race. Jockeys must have more knowledge too because they have to know when to jump. How many times they must jump usually depends on the length of the race. The Kentucky Derby is one example of Thoroughbred horse racing.

Thoroughbred horses are known for beauty, a dignified appearance, determination, and speed and drive. The Thoroughbred horse is widely known for its racing abilities and would not be considered for inexperienced riders or a family pet. They are fast and unpredictable and often can be dangerous for those who aren’t experienced with horses.

Thoroughbreds like the ones used in racing can run up to forty miles per hour. While running this fast they are still able to remain agile, turn quickly and change pace without much effort. There is power in the hindquarters of Thoroughbred horses which is the reason for their speed and accuracy.

Twelve Pack Shelly, multiple stakes winner, Deputy Storm’s first winner, set a new track record in a 10¾ length victory in the first 2-year-old race at Laurel this year. Making her initial start April 8, the filly ran the 4&frac12 furlongs in :50.83, destroying the previous record by more than a second. Finishing third, a neck behind the runner-up, was another Deputy Storm filly, daughter Dylan the Deputy.

Twelve Pack Shelly is owned by her trainer John E. Salzman Jr., Danny Divver, and George Greenwalt. The Pennsylvania-bred filly was bred by Sycamore Hall Farm. She is the third foal of So Smashing, by Two Punch.

A two-time stakes winner, Deputy Storm Deputy Storm, a nine-year-old by Forestry out of two-time Canadian champion Deputy Jane West, by Silver Deputy, stands for a mere $2,000 at Richard Golden and Dr. Tom Bowman’s Northview Stallion Station near Chesapeake City, Md.
