Cozzene and Princess Rooney Lost On The Same Day
A quite remarkable coincidence occurred on October 7th—two great champions were euthanized on the same day. Both were twenty eight years old, both were gray, and both were Breeder’s Cup winners.
Princess Rooney, euthanized due to complications of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), scored her biggest win in 1984 in the inaugural Breeder’s Cup Distaff (gr. I) at Hollywood Park for Paula Tucker the year she was champion older female.
Cozzene won the1985 Breeder’s Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Aqueduct the year he was voted grass champion male and later sired Breeders’ Cup winners Alphabet Soup and Tikkanen.
Since being pensioned, Princess Rooney had filled the role of babysitter to the yearling fillies at Gentry Brothers. She took up residence at the farm in November 1995. Watch The Video of Princess Rooney at Gentry Farm.
