The Pamplemousse – Partnership Horse on the Derby Trail

Derby fever is beginning to hit one brand new partnership—the owners of an exciting gray colt named The Pamplemousse, owned in part by Alex Solis II, the son of the rider.

Other owners, along with Solis II, are Carol Bienstock and Ann Winner of Encino, as well as William Strauss of Del Mar, whose brother, Jeff, is the chef at a restaurant they own in Del Mar, across from the racetrack. The name of the restaurant is the Pamplemousse Grille. Pamplemousse is French for Grapefruit.

Trained by Julio Canani, the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Kafwain, out of a Rubiano mare, is considered one of the West Coast’s leading Triple Crown prospects. The gray/roan colt was purchased for $150,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sale for 2-year-olds in training last March.

The $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4 is the next likely start for The Pamplemousse.
