Horse races is popular the world over, and it has been gaining more and more women enthusiasts over the years. Today, there are a large percentage of women, playing competitive and important roles at high level horse races and prestigious horse tracks.

It all began a about a hundred years ago when the world of horse racing was rocked by the emergence of women competitors. At about 1904, women started coming into sight, whether they were playing important roles such jockeys, or equally important backstage roles as trainers and breeders. The following are some of the most popular women horse race enthusiasts since 1904.

Well-known Women Horse Racing Owners:

Laska Durnell – owned and entered “Elwood” in the Kentucky Derby in 1904. Also trained by a woman, Mrs. J.B. Prather, Elwood was the first starter and winner in a field of five.

Rosa M. Hoots – owned “Black Gold,” who was one impressive thoroughbred. She had so much confidence in Black Gold, and rightly so.

Mrs. John D. “Fannie” Hertz – in 1923, she owned “Reigh Count”, in 1943, “Count Fleet”. Both horses were winners Helen May Whitney – owned two horses – “Twenty Grand” in 1931 and “Shut Out” in 1942. Mrs. Whitney was called “The First Lady of Turf”, having owned two horses winning the Derby twice.

France Genter – In 1940, Mrs. Genter entered the horse racing business at the age of 42. Fifty years later with her horse “Unbridled”, she became the oldest winning owner.

Most Popular Women Jockeys:

Diane Crump was the very first female jockey to enter a pari-mutuel race in North America. Julie Krone was the first female winner of a Triple Crown Event. Also popularly known as the “all time leading female first”, having won “Colonial Affair” at Belmont in 1991. Tami Purcell won the most races with champion horses. Purcell is also considered to be the top female rider of her time.

Strong Female Horse Racing Trainers:

Mary Hirsch – The daughter of a trainer herself, Hirsch was one of the first women trainers in the 1930′s. According to professionals, she was the “pioneering woman trainer” of her day.

Mary Kein – She trained “Indian Maiden”, who afforded her the privilege of being the only woman to win three consecutive Kentucky Oaks titles in 1959, 1960, and 1961.

Jenine Sahadi is a spirited, posting two victories, a second, third and fourth among her seven starts. The victories were posted by Lit de Justice and Elmhurst in back-to-back Sprints in 1996 and ’97. The late-running Lit de Justice was third in the ’95 Sprint. Also that year, the Sahadi-trained Fastness (Ire) was a solid second in the Mile

If you want a comprehensive list of popular females in horse racing, you’d probably end up with hundreds, even thousands, of pages. The answer behind all this is, simply, that horses are most dependent on people. There are many stories of stallions protecting their herds with tricks that only a good mind could manage. Range horses know the dangers they are up against and react much differently than pasture-raised animals.

The domestic horse is protected with shelter, good food, and care by an honest owner. He seldom has to think about more than play or having his own way. His reasoning comes from boredom, the desire to get out of work, and a search for forbidden food. Horses copy each other. If one animal sees another break a fence, raid the hay barn, or find the grain barrel or even open a gate, he immediately wants the same and follows the same procedure to get it.

Watch your horse for an indication of what he is going to do. Actually, an animal telegraphs every move he will make. It is up to the owner to learn to “read” his horse. When an animal is going to shy or buck the muscles of his back tense and can be felt through the saddle.

The ears tell volumes. Ears stiffly forward means the animal is acutely alert. This means interest, curiosity, or fear. The conditions presented will tell the rider what it means. One ear forward and one back means he is listening for the rider and keeping an ear pointed for something ahead.

Ears laid slightly back means he doesn’t like something or doesn’t want to do what is asked. Ears laid back flat against the head means the animal is vicious or angry. He will try to fight, either the owner or another horse.

Horses have a pattern of thought, and once you know them you learn how they react to different situations. But remember, these big animals are afraid of everything they cannot understand or see. If a horse realized his strength, we would never handle him. But he is dependent on man. This is the secret of handling a horse and making a useful animal out of him.

A horse needs something to depend on. You seldom see him alone by choice. At the racetrack the thoroughbred has a chicken on his stall door, or a goat to share his hay, or a dog to lie at his feet, or a cat to rub against his legs. Sometimes a small pony shares his stall; he may look for a favorite groom who talks to him; often there is a quiet understanding between the trainer and the horse, but… there is always something… someone.

When a horse becomes accustomed to your presence and your voice he will begin to take on personality. A quiet, authoritative voice that can also soothe and give confidence will win an animal quicker than anything else. The horse may be able to understand only twelve command words, but the tone of your voice will speak many things to him. Although the horse is normally timid, he will develop confidence in you to the point where he will trust you implicitly.

The horse demands attention and craves affection. However, it must be remembered that a horse is made to do things by fear, hunger, thirst, and biological urge. So we use these things to our advantage without forgetting the other requisites that round out the complete picture of the horse, such as attention and affection. He does things only to satisfy his hunger, demands for comfort, and curiosity and attention. He cannot concentrate for long periods of time.

There are more things to learn about the psychology of your horse, but these will come from experience.

The Dubai World Cup is run every March in Dubai, and is a racing challenge, run over ten furlongs, and has the biggest prizes to match. The race is open to Northern Hemisphere bred four-year-olds and older and Southern Hemisphere bred three-year-olds and older, and participants have come from twelve different countries. The Arabian Horse, which hails from Middle Eastern deserts, is acknowledged as being the purest and oldest of all horse breeds, and has incredible stamina – being able to carry its rider at speed across miles of open desert with little food or water. Today, almost every breed and type of horse has traces of Arab blood and all English Thoroughbreds that are used in horseracing in the UK today are descended from three Arabian stallions: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian or Godolphin Arabian, which were imported to Britain in the late 17th and early 18th century.

For more than two decades, horse owners and breeders from the Arab world have worked to establish the Arab presence in international thoroughbred racing, and with the development of the Dubai World Cup have established themselves as one of the world’s top racing challenges. In a little over a decade they have created one of the highlights of the international racing calendar. Placement in the race is by invite only, and anyone invited naturally turns up as the top prize is $6 million, but the lure is not just in the prize money – the horsemen get generous subsidies for supporting horseracing in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai enjoys a formidable reputation due to its quality, generosity, and sunshine, and has become a mecca for both horse enthusiasts and tourists alike with 50,000 racegoers attending the Dubai World Cup meeting each year.

The Nad Al Sheba racecourse held the Dubai World Cup for the last time in 2009 as their new racetrack Meydan will host the 2010 Dubai World Cup and its associated races next March. All the Thoroughbreds in Britain today can trace their ancestry back to the Three Foundation Sires brought to England from the Middle East between the late 1600s and early 1700s. These are the Godolphin Arabian(1729), Darley Arabian(1704), and the Byerley Turk(1680s). There are 74 Foundation mares who mated with the Foundation sires, and they came from a variety of breeds among England’s racing horses.

Byerley Turk was captured by Captain Robert Byerley at the 1686 Battle of Buda. In 1689, he was sent to Ireland with his master to be part of King William’s War, and they served in the Battle of Boyne as well. The horse is said to have been dark brown in color, with well-known Arabian features such as his arched neck, large eyes, and high-carried tail.

Byerley Turk traces his line to relatively few of today’s Thoroughbreds – 3.3% as opposed to the Godolphin Arabian’s 13.8% and the Darley Arabian’s 95%.

The Godolphin Arabian, also known as the Godolphin Barb, is named after his most famous owner, Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin. There is some controversy as to whether the Godolphin horse was actually an Arabian or a Barb, and this controversy continued to shroud him until his offspring Lath won the Queen’s Plate at the Newmarket races nine successive times. About fifteen hands high, this bay horse has seen its descendants mating with those of Byerley Turk and Darley Arabian to produce several winning Thoroughbreds through the years.

The Darley Arabian is the most famous and most important of the three Foundation Sires. He was a bay Arabian, bought in Syria in 1704 by Thomas Darley. From what information can be accessed, the Darley Arabian was a sight for sore eyes – beautiful and refined, and about 15 hands high.

Like both the other Foundation Sires – coincidentally enough – the Darley Arabian also saw his paternal line continued by one single descendant for four generations. In this case, the bearer of the line was the iconic Eclipse, who was Darley Arabian’s great-great-grandson. Recently, research has revealed that over 95% of today’s stallions have a Y-chromosome that is identical to the Darley Arabian.

Thoroughbreds are among the most famous, coveted and prized breeds of horses. They are known for their speed and agility on the track, and their “hot-blooded” temperament off it.

What makes the Thoroughbred special is the high percentage of Type IIa muscle fibers it carries. Type IIa muscle fibers generate great speed but also allow for endurance, which is why the Thoroughbred is as fast as the fastest and can still maintain its speed for considerable distances in horse races.

A horse race form is a printed program that displays all of the necessary information about a horse race. It will usually list the scheduled races, the names of the horses, and other pertinent race information. A horse race card helps bettors make an informed betting choice. There is a lot of very valuable information on the forms that betters really should know such as the time that each race will be starting.

It will provide information about the purse which is the prize money that must be split between the owner, trainer and jockey. Prize money is also distributed, on a sliding scale, to those finishing in the first few places. The form also provides detail on the distance of the race which is very important. Flat races are usually run at distances from 5 to 12 furlongs. A furlong is one eighth of a mile or 0.2 km. It will also give all of the race details, the horse’s odds at the beginning of the day and will keep you notified of the changes that occur with that horse during the day.

The form will tell you the color of the saddle cloths that the horses are wearing so that you can tell them apart basically. You will need to know the post position which tells you which position is assigned to the horse in the starting gate. Of course you will want to know the name of the horses too, which is listed on the forms. Owners often use a name that stands out and is easily recalled by bettors. Actually, some bettors bet on name alone.

The major colors are bay, chestnut, black, brown, white, gray, pinto (patches of brown, white and black), buckskin, dun, and roan. The color of each horse is also listed on the form as well as abbreviations of the horse and its sex. Some of the abbreviations are c=colt, f=filly, h=thoroughbred aged 5 or older, and g= gelding. All of this information is very important to know before betting.

You should also know the horse’s age because most horses reach mental maturity at around seven or eight years old, when their behavior generally becomes calmer and more accepting but of course your forms will tell you this information as well. People often want to know who the parent’s of the horse are and their names. This information is usually, but not always included. This data is useful for bettors to determine possible horse performance through lineage.

It is valuable to know who handled the horse’s upbringing, the amount of weight, including the jockey that the horse will be carrying. Obvious other facts of importance are who the trainer is, who the owner is, certainly the jockey who has a huge part to play in a big race. His ability to guide the horse in the race often spells the difference between victory and defeat.

There are other sections on the forms as well but the summary of past results is very important. These are crucial to viewers who want to distinguish which horse they have backed.

If you have large breed horses, such as Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses or Warmbloods you may want to go with a stall that is 16×16. These stalls are often referred to as stallion and foaling stalls. Ponies will not need any more than a 10×10 stall. Moderate size horses will do well with a 12×12 stall.

The dividers between your horse’s stall and the next stall need to be made of a heavy material. Most stalls are constructed of two-inch plans that go up to about five feet or so. Another divider should be placed so that the horses can see each other but not necessarily make contact. The same is true for the front of the stall. Stall doors may have gates that swing open so that the horses can stick their heads out into the barn aisle.

Watch the latch on the door. It is not uncommon for a horse to figure out their stall door latch and easily let themselves out. If your horse figures out his latch you will also want to place a chain with a simple clip that the horse cannot undo. Never padlock a horse in stall, as you may not be there to release the horse in the case of a fire or other emergency.

It is important that the stall be very well ventilated. Horses can produce a lot of heat from their bodies and a poorly ventilated stall may cause bacterial growth in the walls, sickness, respiratory problems and bad smells.

Horses do like to lie down and sleep at night and they will do so, if they feel safe and comfortable in their stall. They have to take a load off of their limbs during the night, so you need to be sure that the horse has enough room to lie down. Sometimes horses will lie down but not leave themselves enough room to get back up – this is know in the horse world as being ‘cast’. When a horse is cast they may thrash about and panic because they can’t get enough room to leverage themselves back on their feet. You will need to get in the stall and assist the horse in getting back on it’s feet – be careful even a quite horse may be scared and lash out in fright.

Most complexes use shavings as bedding for horses. Many people will put several wheelbarrow loads of shavings in their stall for their horse, but this is not necessarily good. If you have too much bedding then your horse’s legs can become weak due to the lack of contact with the ground. Bones need to be stressed and concussed by the ground in order to maintain their strength. You want to have just enough bedding that the horse can still feel the ground, but the bedding will also absorb urine.

Your horse’s stall should contain a feeder, a water bucket or automatic waterer, possibly a salt/mineral block and a toy to prevent boredom. The less that you have in the stall the better and safer it will be for the horse. You should also provide some hay for your horse to munch on.

Both the chariot horse racing and the mounted horse racing were popular during these ages. These later became an obsession among Romans when they have adopted the sport.

Modern racing is said to have started in the 12th century when the first breeding between Arabian and English horses were made. King Charles II was known to have held horse races in his private courses during 1660 to 1685.

By the 16th century, the English had been known to produce a number of racecourses. Queen Anne who founded the Ascot in 1711 is known to have made horse racing an official sport.

Halfway in 1700′s, the Jockey Club was created through the initiation of the elite figures involved in horse racing. This organization was the first legion of jockeys that established the comprehensive rules and regulations including the standards as covered by the sports. Thus, they became the overseers of the sports and sanctioned horse racing events.

The Jockey Club was also the initiator for the regulation of breeding among horses. Thus, James Weatherby, an accountant of the Jockey Club during those times, traced back the family lines of all racing breeds in England. His researches brought forth the publication of the General Stud Book, which was basically, the basis of authority in terms of the breeds that could be put to race. According to the General Stud Book, only those pedigrees that have descended from the line of the “foundations sires” are considered as Thoroughbreds. The foundation sires are the: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian.

Only in 17th century did the sport arrive in America for which the very first racetrack was seen in the Long Island. While it has become a favorite past time among Americans, no one initiated the formalization of horse racing until after the Civil War. Because of the already-established obsession plus the industrial development, and widespread gambling on horse races, the sport grew largely by the year 1890 when 314 operating tracks are known to be on regular operation in the country.

Due to the lack of a governing body, this sport had become purely dominated by criminal elements. In 1894 though, the most prominent and high-ranking stable owners met and organized the American Jockey Club which was patterned on the system as used by the Jockey Club in England.

Nowadays the sport has reached various countries across the globe. Governing bodies were also formed to regulate the horse racing events.

There are five racecourses situated in and around Dublin, hosting both National Hunt and Flat race meetings, so no matter what time of year you visit the city, you’re almost assured to find a race meeting taking place at one of the tracks.

The Curragh is one of the oldest racecourses in the Emerald Isle and the name ‘Curragh’ is actually the Gaelic name for racecourse. Situated around 30 miles from Dublin in County Kildare, there is a train and bus service to the track on racedays. The Curragh is a high-profile track and hosts the majority of the major Flat races on the Irish racing calendar, including the Irish classics.

Fairyhouse, situated about 12 miles from Dublin in County Meath, hosts the Irish Grand National and has been racing since 1848. The track has had racing luminaries such as Arkle, Desert Orchid, Captain Christy, Persian War and more recently Istabraq and Florida Pearl among its visitors. It continues to attract the best horses across Ireland and the rest of the UK to compete over the near- two-mile course.

Leopardstown racecourse is home to 22 race meetings throughout the year, with both National Hunt and Flat race meetings on the agenda. Leopardstown is actually situated within the city environs, around 12 miles from the city-centre. The course has staged racing since 1888 and like Fairyhouse attracts some of the racing game’s biggest names thanks to a host of high-profile meetings, including the Lexus Chase, Irish Champion Hurdle and Irish Hennessy Gold Cup over the sticks, and the Irish Champion Stakes and many of the Irish Classic Trials over the Flat.

Naas racecourse can be found some 25 miles from Dublin city, in County Kildare. Perhaps less well-known than its more famous neighbours, Naas is nevertheless a high quality racecourse and is another to mix both National Hunt and Flat racing throughout its calendar.

Punchestown is also situated in County Kildare, around a 30 minute drive from Dublin city and is one of the best known racecourses in the British Isles. Punchestown is exclusively a National Hunt track and is often considered the spiritual home of Irish National Hunt racing. The course has been racing since 1824 and has consistently attracted the best racehorses to compete, with the highlight being the five-day Punchestown festival, held in late-April.

Despite numbering in the hundreds, it won’t be surprising to learn that hotels in Dublin are often in high demand whenever horseracing comes to the region, but with five top racecourses in proximity to the city it should be possible to find accommodation for the race meeting of your choice.

And of course, you’ll be able to spend your winnings garnered from your day at the races in the wide selection of bars and restaurants that can be found throughout Dublin’s streets.

Every time horse racing becomes the topic of conversation, people usually think of only one thing, and that is the thoroughbred. But contrary to the misconception, there other types of horse racing such as harness racing and steeple chase. It just so happens that the thoroughbred is the most popular! In fact, the Kentucky Derby is known as the most exciting two minutes in the world of Sports.

The Famous Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is only part of a three-part grand slam horse racing: The Triple Crown. Imagine the excitement offered by the entire race. It’s triple the fun and adrenaline! The Kentucky Derby plus the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes complete the renowned Triple Crown prize. To this day, there are only 11 known horses to have achieved such a prestigious prize.

For the record, the highest level of competition for horse racing are the stake races. This type of race is reserved for the best horses, and even then, there is a required registration for each horse. The money collected is added to the prize money. When a Stake race is a Graded race, there is a certain appeal of class to it.

Other Types of Horse Races and their Criteria

Horses have to meet criteria before they can be allowed to race. A race may require additional weight requirements for better horses. This type of race is called a handicap race. The added weight is dependent upon past performances of the horses.

Other races sometimes require that horse must be a “non winner of three”. This is called an allowance race. Horses entered in this type of race is usually chosen to be prepped for better races. Most of the time these horses go on to compete in handicap and stake races.

Another type of race, and probably the most common, is the claiming race. A claiming race may also be “optional.” Before the race, owners are asked to specify an amount by which the thoroughbred may be claimed or purchased for.

You can rest assured that the racing field is leveled by this requirement. Obviously, owners will not list better horses in a claiming race. This type of race may be a good place to expose or train your weaker horses. Who knows? They might just need a little training to turn into a champion. Just make sure you are ready to part with your horse.

If you don’t want to part with your horses and you want to list them in a race to see just how they perform or to familiarize them with competitive races, a maiden race is the best avenue for this. This type of race is confined for horses with no record of wins. The winner of the race is said to have “broken his maidenhood.”

When to Watch Which Race

Race tracks usually hold eight or more races each day, combining all of the above-mentioned races. It doesn’t matter which type or race you watch and whether you win or not. In the end, you’ll still experience the fervent excitement that keeps horse racing enthusiasts coming back for seconds.

I immediately like his big, kind eye and thoughtful gaze, and after visiting him once more the next day, purchased him. Lukas’ extremely sensitive nature was soon going to become very obvious. I enlisted the help of a trainer to prepare Lukas for lower-level Dressage competition. Within a short time, Lukas reacted in dangerous and resistive ways: bucking, spooking and bolting. After discontinuing the trainer, I decided to train him myself and hopefully reclaim his trust.

I use a combination of shaping, clicker training and positive reinforcement along with intermediary markers to signal correct inclinations. As a psychiatric nurse for twenty-five years, I’ve borrowed behavior modification techniques from my career, and bits and pieces from over thirty years of studying every type of training from birds, zoo animals, dogs and marine mammals.

I started with face and neck tricks and progressed to more complex movements and behaviors. Lukas’ curious, eager nature sparked an exploration into cognitive and perceptual tasks as well. His current repertoire includes: the smile, pose, yes, no, kiss (dry and wet), fetch, blindfold, catch, yawn, wave, pedestal work, Spanish Walk (forward and backward), stay and come, jambet (three-legged pivot), reverence, passage, bow, crossing his front legs, lay down (and I sit on him), feet together (front and back), hide and seek, acting lame, pushing a cart and rearing. In addition, he spells, counts, identifies shapes, discriminates colors, and understands the concepts of spatial relationships, object permanence, proportion, same/different, and his newest: absentness.

To date Lukas has been on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, HLN, Equisearch, Equine VIP, Pet Life Radio, RFD-Radio and the Associated Press released a feature story about him. He has been in countless magazines, newsletters, forums, blogs on-line sites and newspapers. He is the Spokeshorse for TROTT (Training Racehorses Off The Track) and is the poster-boy for the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Also, he is associated with HEAL (Human Equine Alliances for Learning), a therapy practice in Chehalis, Washington, that assists trauma victims.

Lukas’ purpose continues to be to show the happy results of kind training and that animals are smart and have emotions.  Horses can do all that – they just need to be taught in a way that they understand.

Both the chariot horse racing and the mounted horse racing were popular during these ages. These later became an obsession among Romans when they have adopted the sport.

For thousand of years that followed, this type of sports was known to be performed only for the noble men and royalties.

Modern racing is said to have started in the 12th century when the first breeding between Arabian and English horses were made. These were sparred by the return of the noble knights to the mother land after the Crusades. These are known to have produced sturdy horses with excellent speed. Thus, breeders maximized the potentiality of a racehorse and put them into tracks. This breed is the Thoroughbred that we know of today which is still the most popular breed in the United Kingdom.

King Charles II was known to have held horse races in his private courses during 1660 to 1685.

By the 16th century, the English had been known to produce a number of racecourses. Queen Anne who founded the Ascot in 1711 is known to have made horse racing an official sport.

Halfway in 1700′s, the Jockey Club was created through the initiation of the elite figures involved in horse racing. This organization was the first legion of jockeys that established the comprehensive rules and regulations including the standards as covered by the sports.  Thus, they became the overseers of the sports and sanctioned horse racing events.

The Jockey Club was also the initiator for the regulation of breeding among horses. Thus, James Weatherby, an accountant of the Jockey Club during those times, traced back the family lines of all racing breeds in England. His researches brought forth the publication of the General Stud Book, which was basically, the basis of authority in terms of the breeds that could be put to race. According to the General Stud Book, only those pedigrees that have descended from the line of the “foundations sires” are considered as Thoroughbreds. The foundation sires are the: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian.

Only in 17th century did the sport arrive in America for which the very first racetrack was seen in the Long Island. While it has become a favorite past time among Americans, no one initiated the formalization of horse racing until after the Civil War. Because of the already-established obsession plus the industrial development, and widespread gambling on horse races, the sport grew largely by the year 1890 when 314 operating tracks are known to be on regular operation in the country.

Due to the lack of a governing body, this sport had become purely dominated by criminal elements. In 1894 though, the most prominent and high-ranking stable owners met and organized the American Jockey Club which was patterned on the system as used by the Jockey Club in England.

Nowadays the sport has reached various countries across the globe. Governing bodies were also formed to regulate the horse racing events.

Horses in every breed, and trained for any riding style, can easily be found. Price levels vary widely as well. Individuals must still be very cautious when purchasing this type of animal. It is an investment of sorts. Numerous issues should be considered during the decision process. In addition, many different sales sources are available to assist the buyer in finding the right horse.

A potential buyer should decide specifically what he or she intends to use the horse for. This streamlines the purchase process, making it easier to select the right animal. Most horses cannot be utilized for all purposes, simply because they lack the training. Their body type may only be suited for specific uses. For example, a draft horse would not be effective at herding cattle. A thoroughbred racehorse fresh from the race track would not make a good child\’s horse.

This helps to identify lameness issues. Some people believe that x-rays should be included in the exam, to thoroughly screen for any lameness issues. On the other hand, x-rays in older horses will usually show some sort of bone abnormality that may or may not cause lameness in the future.

A pre-purchase veterinary exam is recommended. This should include a complete stress test to rule out lameness. Some people like to have x-rays taken, but the efficacy of performing such a procedure is somewhat questionable. Certain individuals feel that x-rays are necessary to determine if there are any developing leg abnormalities. Others feel x-rays may falsely reveal issues that really are not problems.

The current economic crisis actually began with the burst of the housing bubble in the United States. Housing values had risen so high so quickly throughout most of the country, that a decline in values was almost predictable. In the last few months, with a boost from historically low mortgage rates and the first time home buyer tax credit, the number of real estate sales has been on the rise. There has been a 63% increase this year as compared to this time last year, in existing home sales.

Vivacious (West Quest-Entally) is a full sister to former top class sprinting mare Reunification and talented middle distance performer National Trust.

The filly began well and raced outside of the leader Clan McLeod (Savoire Vivre-Starred)  and they matched motors to the home turn with Destiana (Invincible Spirit-Begum) closing in after trailing the pair.

Vivacious’s rider Brendon McCoull became anxious on the home turn but the filly responded and drew alongside Clan McLeod and eventually gained the upper hand and went on to score by a half-length from Clan McLeod with Destiana over two lengths astern.

Trainer Barry Campbell was calm and reserved after the race but admitted the filly was a potential star from the day she first took to the bridle.

“The dam (Entally) is a marvel isn’t she? That’s her third foal and they’ve all won and showed good stuff from day one,” Campbell said.

“It takes a good one to travel over four hours in a float to the races and win at first look at a track and she’s done it without having to be fully extended.”

“That’s as good a win as you’ll see by a two-year-old given the circumstances,” he said.

McCoull was equally as impressed.

“She is such a natural. She had a bit of a stargaze at a few things today but in the end she did what she had to do to win. It was impressive,” McCoull said.

The filly is owned and raced by Richard and Miranda Foster and John and Judy Kingston in partnership with the trainer’s wife Anne Campbell.

“We had a lot of success with this filly’s sister Reunification and now that she’s been sold and retired to stud this filly is a very nice replacement,” Mrs Foster said.

Campbell said Vivacious is unlikely to contest the Alexandra Plate in Hobart in a fortnight and is more likely to be kept for the Alfa Bowl in Launceston on November 22.

Till date, the National Museum and Hall of Fame has named merely 5 people as ‘Exemplars of Racing’ in the entire history of American Thoroughbred horse racing. For a jockey to qualify as an inductee to the Hall of Fame, it is compulsory that he be licensed for 20 years. Alternately, a jockey is eligible for the Hall of Fame even if he has been retired for a minimum of 5 years. If a trainer is licensed and has been actively involved with Thoroughbreds for a minimum of 25 years, he too is eligible. A trainer who has been retired for at least 5 years also matches the eligibility criteria of the Hall of Fame. As per the 2007 Hall of Fame Day, the Hall of Fame boasts popular racing champions of which 176 are Thoroughbred race horses, 84 are trainers and 88 are jockeys.

All thoroughbreds retired for more than 25 calendar years, qualify through the Historic Review Committee. Similarly, jockeys and trainers who have been retired for more than 25 years become eligible through the Historic Review Committee. The 20-25 year criteria for jockeys and trainers may be relinquished. However, a waiting period of 5 years has to be observed before they can become eligible.

For a thoroughbred race horse to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, the eligibility criteria requires that the horse must be retired for at least 5 full calendar years. Some legendary champion race horses that managed to make it to the Hall of Fame include great names like Man o’ War, Citation, Seabiscuit and Seattle Slew. These distinguished race horses have participated and won some of the world’s most prestigious horse racing important events.

The track is named after John and Henry Churchill. The two leased eighty acres of land to their nephew Colonel Meriweather Lewis Clark, Jr. Clark was actually grandson of famous explorer William Clark. He was also the president of the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association. Richard Ten Broeck was a horse breeder and trainer and Clark’s father-in-law. Broek was an accomplished trainer, regularly attending the English Derby at Epsom Downs in London. He was the man that introduced Clark to the world of horse racing.

Louisville had always had a love affair with horseracing. After all, it was home to Oakland racecourse as well as Woodlawn. When these two tracks closed, there was a void in Louisville that needed filling. Churchill Downs would do just that.

For quite some time, Churchill had a reputation as a gambling hall. Some changes needed to be made and in 1893 the track was sold to a syndicate that was led by William Applegate. New changes were implemented including shortening the track and the commissioning of the twin spire grandstand in 1895. A new tradition would also be implemented that year – the adorning of the Kentucky Derby winner in a garland of roses.

The twin spires are the most recognizable feature of Churchill Downs. They have been standing since 1895 and were designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez. Since the spires were built, several renovations have been made to the track itself. Today, the Churchill Downs complex covers over 147 acres, nearly double its original size. The dirt oval main track is a mile while the turf track is 7/8 of a mile. From 2001 to 2005, the grandstand underwent a $121 million renovation. The renovation replaced the clubhouse and added 79 luxury suites and the twin spires were refurbished.

Another unique addition to Churchill Downs was the adding of a mural that depicted the 96 jockeys that had won the Kentucky Derby from 1875 to 2004. The mural was painted by Pierre Bellocq, who updated the mural in 2008 to reflect all of the winning jockeys and trainers to date. The renovation was somewhat of a controversy since the new grandstand suites block full view of the twin spires, although they are still the highest points of the facility.

Harness Horse Racing: This type of horse racing is popular in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and North America. It involves the horses pulling the jockey on a two-wheeled cart. This form of horse racing requires strategy as much as speed. There are two types of this form of horse racing which is based on the gait used: Pacing consists of horses running faster with shorter breaks during a race. The Standardbred is recognized worldwide for its harness racing ability. Standardbreds are best known for their ability to harness race at a trot or pace form. They are solid, well-built horses with good dispositions. Standardbreds are relatively intelligent animals.

Thoroughbred Racing: Thoroughbred horse racing is a worldwide event that involves the racing of thoroughbred horses. It is governed by different national bodies. There are two forms of the sport: flat racing and jump racing. Jump racing can be further divided into hurdling and steeple chasing. Horses competing in this form of racing are faster than those in other equestrian events. It is a popular sport with gamblers. The distances of the race can vary from 3/4 mile to more than two miles. Speed is a major factor with thoroughbred racing. It involves high-quality horses and prestigious prizes. Horses competing in these types of events are often of the same class, gender, and age.

Quarter-Horse Racing: This type of event involves the racing of horses at great speed for short distances on a straight course. It got its name quarter-horse because the race originally ran a quarter of a mile. It is a much newer sport because its governing body was not formed until the 1940s. The classic distance of a Quarter Horse race is 440 yards (400 m), but races are run anywhere between 100 and 1,000 yards (91 and 910 m). Quarter Horses are faster than Thoroughbreds, but run shorter distances. American Quarter Horses are shorter and more muscular than Thoroughbreds.

Stakes Races: This type of race involves the best horses. These events have the highest purses Races run from small purses of a few thousand dollars to the Breeders’ Cup Classic for $5 million. There are three grades controlled by the Graded Stakes Committee, insuring a Grade 1, 2, or 3 race event. Most midsize or larger tracks will have at least one grade 3 race while larger tracks such as Churchill Downs or Belmont Park will have several of all grades.

Playing the Class Game

Horses are conditioned for competition in a number of different ways. Some horses improve when racing against higher-class competitors and are occasionally placed in races where they are outclassed. This happens when a horse has been in the money a number of times, but hasn´t won, or hasn´t won in a while. The horse will usually perform poorly in the higher-class race, but improve in the process. After a drop back to a more appropriate class, this horse that hasn´t done better than third in its last five races wins with energy to spare.

What makes this an interesting scenario to follow in your handicapping is that the big loss in his last race makes the horse look less promising to the casual observer. The odds in his current race are usually long, longer than the horse deserves, and under-valued horses are golden opportunities in handicapping.

Applying Your Strategy

To use this strategy successfully, select a horse that has shown some promise in his next-to-last race. This could be a third place win, a favorable comment, a change in equipment for that race with an improved finishing position; or a notation that he was forced wide, but still managed to make up ground.

The horse´s last race, the losing race, will have been a jump in class in which he performed badly. Limit your selections to horses that are working with a familiar rider and stable, and have had some success at today´s track.

Today´s race should be a drop back to a class at which the horse has been in the money, and at a distance and surface he has mastered. This will not be a long shot wager. If the odds are greater than four-to-one and there isn´t an overwhelming favorite in the race, there´s something else going on, so pass on the wager.

Observing changes in a horse´s racing pattern or a trainer´s approach can lead to a winning handicapping formula. Learning to read the story behind the facts makes thoroughbred horse racing a satisfying and sometimes lucrative pastime.

His career to date has netted six wins and $998,450 in prizemoney with the highlight being his Group One victories in the AJC Galaxy beating G1 winners Danleigh, Gold Trail and Swiss Ace and the VRC Lightning Stakes defeating Group One winners Wanted, Starspangledbanner, Headway and Duporth.

“Blessed with an electric turn of foot, Nicconi is a very masculine thoroughbred with a powerful sprinter’s physique that is going to make him a popular addition to our roster,” said Widden Stud’s Antony Thompson.

“Widden have purchased the four year-old with some of his current owners retaining a stake in his future stud career, so there will a percentage of Nicconi to be syndicated with shares available for interested parties.”
Nicconi is a grand-son of breed-shaping sire Danzig from the Group 3 placed Scenic mare Nicola Lass, who has left four stakes-horses in Niconero, Nicconi, Recooperate and Holly Go Lightly.
He traces in tail female line to revered New Zealand matriarch Froth, whose many notable descendants include leading two year old sire General Nediym, who was a stalwart at Widden Stud before his premature death in 2009.
“As a Group One winning three year old against older company and a brilliant winner of the Group One Lightning Stakes just like General Nediym, we firmly believe Nicconi will be a more than suitable replacement. Horses with this type of speed rarely fail,” said Thompson.
Widden Stud has set his fee for next spring at $20,000 plus GST although his fee could be subject to change dependent on his performance at Royal Ascot.

That kind of information is what will make your clocker a profitable tool in your handicapping arsenal.

2000 Guineas

This is the opening Classic of the season and it is open to three year old colts and fillies. It is raced over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket and is a big test of speed, stamina and courage over an undulating straight course. Although it is open to fillies they very rarely run, they are normally entered for the 1000 Guineas (See below). For the colts it is also the first leg of the triple-crown; which is made up from the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger. This year the race will be run on 2nd May, which is the opening day of the Guineas Festival.

1000 Guineas

The second Classic of the season, which is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies only and is also raced over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. The race also forms the first leg of the Fillies triple-crown, which can be completed by winning this race, the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger. It is raced on the second day of the Guineas Festival, which this year will be 3rd May.

The Epsom Oaks

The third Classic is the Epsom Oaks, which like the 1000 Guineas is only open to 3 year old fillies. However this is raced on the Epsom Downs race course over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs in length. The Oaks forms the second leg of the Fillies Triple Crown and is one of the most valuable fillies only races in the world. This year it will be run on June 4th.

The Epsom Derby

The Derby is probably the most famous and prestigious race of the five English Classics and is renowned the World over. Although it is open to fillies as well as colts, it is rare for them to be entered, with the Fillies usually opting for the Epsom Oaks. Like the Oaks, it is run at Epsom Downs race course over a 1 mile 4 furlongs and forms the second leg of the colts triple crown. The race will take place this year on June 5th.

St Leger

The fifth and final Classic race of the season is the St Leger which is open to three year old colts and fillies and is raced at Doncaster race course over the longer distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs. It is a big test of stamina and often its winners stay in training for the following year. In some respects the St Leger has lost some of its importance, due mainly to its distance. The last colt to have won the Triple Crown was the great Nijinsky in 1970 and the last filly to have won the fillies version was Oh So Sharp in 1985. The St Leger takes place on 12th September.

The importance and prestige of the five classic races is underpinned by not only the prize money available to the winner of each races, all of which are well in to six figures (the prize money available for the Epsom Derby is £1.25 million) but also by the potential breeding values of the winning horses. Any horse that wins any of the classics will automatically increase in value at stud in the hope that they pass their winning genes on to future progeny.

THEY could not have asked for a better year. Record crowds, two massive Saturday meetings, and the world’s best racehorse Sea The Stars capping the campaign with a fabulous Juddmonte International victory.

That’s the focus for the team at York Racecourse as they begin to gear up for their 17-day season on Knavesmire, which starts on May 12 with the three-day Dante Festival.

With Royal Ascot at York, the St Leger Festival and a four-day  York Ebor Festival in the bank over the past half-dozen years, the feeling of “looking to go one better” is hardly new.

And, if anything, they relish the challenge.

“You always have to keep moving forward,” says James Brennan, York’s head of marketing and sponsorship. “2009 was a fantastic season, particularly coming after the disappointments of 2008.

“It was fantastic to see the trackwork project up and running and meet with approval from so many better judges than me. It was fantastic to see the world’s best racehorse Sea The Stars – the crowd really welcomed him back as a true champion, not just a winning favourite.

“It’s important to us that people come and support us and we are grateful for that because it all gets reinvested back into racing at York whether it is boosting prize money or capping attendance fees. It can only come on the back of people’s support and we are conscious of the need to keep earning that.”

The off-season saw York picking up gong after gong. They were hailed by the Racegoers Club, named the country’s top Flat course by the Racehorse Owners’ Association and their groundstaff were also praised with an industry award.

This year, the four-day Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival, running from Tuesday, August 17 to Friday, August 20, remains the ace in York’s pack, with the Juddmonte International, totesport Ebor, Darley Yorkshire Oaks and Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes the feature contests.

World Cup action should be a highlight of the 40th Charity Day, on Saturday, June 12, with England kicking off their challenge for the trophy against the USA following a meeting which has raised more than £4.7 million for cancer charities. Brennan reckons there is much to look forward to.

“It will be great to be coming back racing,” he added. “We are looking forward to seeing Madness perform. There’s always a buzz going into the season and you will start hearing talk about the St Nicholas Abbeys and the other horses that are set to come and run in May and will come back to us again in August.

“The experience of 2009 for most of the 80,000 people who attended the first four-day Ebor Festival was a positive one and we will come on for the run, as they say.

“You wouldn’t work at a racecourse without looking forward to the season. Every year, we have had some different things to do. It’s a great industry to be involved in on racedays.

“There is a real pride when the alarm clock goes off, you come in and the place is waking up. By the time racegoers and horses arrive it is a buzz. We will make sure we are ready.”

In order to regulate the breeding of race horses, the Jockey Club formed the General Stud Book which lists all Thoroughbred horses who were to be allowed race in this country professionally.

Millions of people began to watch horseracing with the technological advances of the 19th century, with a marked increase in betting and media coverage. Interest continued to escalate with the introduction of television, and was compounded by the opening of the first betting shops in the early 1960s.

Organised steeplechase racing developed from the English and Irish past-time of foxhunting – rough cross-country races known as “pounding races”, in which the winner was simply the one who out-lasted other riders. At the end of the 1700s, racers agreed on the end-point for a cross-country race ? more often than not, a church steeple. The prizes back in those days tended to be money and alcohol! The word “steeplechase” appeared officially for the first time in the Irish Racing Calendar in 1807.

Two of the most famous steeplechase races in the world are the Grand National which started in 1839 and is run at Aintree in Liverpool, and the Irish Grand National, held every year over the Easter weekend at the Fairyhouse Racecourse in County Meath, Ireland. The Irish Grand National has a prize fund of ?250,000 and runs over 3 miles, 5 furlongs, and includes 23 fences. As always, people looked to popular culture, and especially to sports, for escape, distraction, even for symbols of hope, and the great Thoroughbred race horses of the 1930s rose to the occasion.

Equipoise

One of the first horse-racing stars of the 1930s, Equipoise (1928-1938) first attracted notice with his Keene Memorial Stakes win at Belmont Park in 1930. Unlikely victories were Equipoise’s specialty – he was late out of the gate at the Pimlico Futurity that year, even leaving two of his shoes behind in his rush to catch up, but still beating out Twenty Grand and Mate for a first-place finish. He returned from injury after a hoof crack ended his two-year-old season and severely curtailed his three-year-old season (in which he raced only three times); his four-year-old season saw wins at the Metropolitan Handicap, Stars and Stripes Handicap and the Whitney Stakes, plus a world mile record.

Continuing hoof problems shortened a brilliant career, but his son Shut Out came within a hairsbreadth of a 1942 Triple Crown victory (he won Kentucky and Belmont), rendering a fitting tribute to this horse’s bloodied-but-unbowed greatness.

Seabiscuit & War Admiral

The history of horse racing during this period can, in part, be told as the story of Man O’War’s descendants.

Of no one is that more true than of Seabiscuit, grandson of that legendary Thoroughbred and son of Man O’War’s talented but excessively ornery offspring Hard Tack (for whom Seabiscuit was named – Seabiscuit being another name for the tough bread known as hardtack). Initially scrawny and lazy, Seabiscuit changed hands several times and posted a solid but unremarkable three-year season (five wins out of thirty-five starts), but under owner Charles S. Howard and trainer Tom Smith the horse developed a fierce will to win that would make him both lucrative and, for spectators, inspiring.

With steadily increasing imposts, Seabiscuit still managed a run of five stakes wins during the summer of 1937, even after a devastating early-season loss to rival Rosemont (due to jockey Red Pollard’s never-admitted blindness in one eye, which caused him not to see Rosement creeping up in the home stretch).

He finished the year with 11 wins out of 15 races, and was the most lucrative horse on the track for this sixth year of the Depression; the horse’s up-then-down-but-never-out record captured the American imagination (and, consequently, earned boatloads of money for owner Howard, a savvy merchandiser). All was set for the match of the century – between Seabiscuit and his uncle War Admiral, another Man O’War descendant and the previous year’s Triple Crown winner.

A star with East Coast racing fans (just as Seabiscuit’s most fanatical following could be found in and around California), War Admiral, who matched his famous father in temperament (touchy, to say the least) but not in size (War Admiral was smaller and more compact than Man O’War, though he is played in the 2003 movie Seabiscuit by a Clydesdale-sized bruiser), won not only 21 of 26 starts during 1937, but spent the early part of 1938 winning major races up and down the East Coast.

Thus an Ali-vs.-Frazier, Superman-meets-Batman level of hype greeted the matchup between the two, which took place on November 1, 1938, at a packed (40,000 spectators) Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral entered the race heavily favored, with 1-4 odds and heavy press support. After all, not only was his record more consistent, he had a lightning-fast start (all-important in a head-to-head race) and good health.

But trainer Tom Smith had a trick card up his sleeve – he’d been secretly training the usually smooth-beginning, strong-finishing horse to explode from the gate. Seabiscuit took an early lead, which War Admiral ate into and even, for a brief period, erased, before a blazing finish took Seabiscuit to a four-length victory over 1937′s Horse of the Year.

Just when no greater accomplishment seemed possible for this legendary horse, Seabiscuit spent the years 1939-40 recovering from an injury some had deemed career-ending – this time with his original jockey Red Pollard in the saddle. (Pollard had had to give up Seabiscuit’s reins to George Woolf after a near-fatal 1938 accident.) The Early Years

Red Rum was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland in 1965. He was passed around to several owners before being purchased for Noel Le Mar. The agent who made the purchase was the now-legendary horse trainer Donald “Ginger” McCain.

It wasn’t apparent at the time, but Red Rum was saddled with a debilitating bone disease in his foot. For many horses (and many trainers) this would mean the end of a racing career before it even began. For Ginger and Red Rum, though, it was just an obstacle to greatness that had to be overcome.

Ginger McCain trained Red Rum in the sand and shallow waters at Southport in Merseyside. This routine is often said to be the reason that “Rummy” was able to overcome his disability and race on a world-class level.

His Legendary Career

Red Rum had a flat racing pedigree, making him more genetically suited to racing short, straight distances. However, Rummy’s true talent came out in steeplechases. His power, speed and jumping ability carried him to his first Grand National title in 1973. The very next year, Red Rum returned to take his second title. He was the first horse to take consecutive firsts since Reynoldstown in 1935-1936. Red Rum’s spirit and grace had already begun to charm the leagues of Grand National fans.

In the following two years, Red Rum lost out on the title, coming in second both times. When he returned in 1977 to try again, he was largely regarded as past his prime. He was 12 years old and not expected to place highly. He surprised sporting fans around the world when he came in a remarkable 25 lengths ahead of the nearest horse, taking his third Grand National win. To this day, Red Rum’s third win is known as one of the greatest moments in horse racing history.

Red Rum’s career included many wins other than his Grand National Victories. Most notably, he won the Scottish Grand National just three weeks after his 1973 Grand National win. To date, he is the only horse to have taken first in both races consecutively.

Retirement and Beyond

Red Rum was headed for the Grand National once again in 1978 but suffered a hairline fracture in one of his heels shortly before the race. He was retired soon after, but his public life and notoriety by no means diminished with the end of his career. Red Rum was a national celebrity by this time and traveled all over the country for various engagements. He often led pre-race parades at Aintree and was a popular guest at charity benefits and public events.

When Red Rum died on October 18, 1995, his remains were lovingly buried at the winning post at Aintree Racecourse. Ginger McCain, the trainer who led this remarkable horse to his life of victory, said that the burial place was perfect. He reported that he was comforted by the thought of all future winning horses racing over Red Rum on the way to their own victories.

Despite treatment, tendon repair is prolonged in horses and the composition, structure and function of the mature repair tissue may never equal that of an uninjured tendon, (Heinninger; 1994). The potential for re-injury is much greater once a tendon injury has been sustained, (Heinninger; 1994) which can, if the management and approach to future performance is not sympathetic to this, cause major compromise to the future career of the National Hunt racehorse.

Remember that racing stables and studs have a lot of young horses to break in a very short time. With a population of around 1,100 thoroughbreds from around the globe, Hong Kong racing works under an easy to understand handicap system, where gallopers gain or lose rating points from their performance on the racecourse, resulting in close and competitive racing.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has a monopoly on racing and betting in the territory, a holdover from colonial days, and the HKJC is the territories largest taxpayer and charity. Massive betting pools are involved and Hong Kong racing officials understand that it is imperative to share every piece of information there is with the betting public.

The racing club website has easily the best information I have ever seen with full videos and extensive reporting of every race held. Trackwork data, performance history, weights carried, times, everything is easily found and exhaustively detailed.

To summarise, for any thoroughbred racing enthusiast Hong Kong racing is an absolute must see experience. The city is situated on one of the most spectacular harbors imaginable, hotels are plentiful and first class and the shopping and gastronomic delights are legendary.

The Thoroughbred breed includes some of the most valuable animals in the world. In 1985 an untested yearling colt named Seattle Dancer was sold at auction for the record price of $13.1 million just on the basis of his pedigree.

The Thoroughbred pedigree dates back to the late 1600s and may be the oldest recorded pedigree for any animal population. One of the earliest formal registries was the General Stud Book for Thoroughbreds that began in 1791. It shows that the breed descended from a group of English-bred horses whose ancestry can be traced back to three foundation stallions: the Darley Arabian owned by Thomas Darley (1703); the Godolphin Arabian “Barb” owned by Lord Godolphin (1730); and the Byerly Turk owned by Captain Robert Byerly (1683). These three stallions were imported to England from North Africa and the Middle East around the turn of the 17th century and were bred to the strong, locally available native English mares.

The Jockey Club took over the General Stud Book in 1896 and is the official registry for Thoroughbreds. The JC manages one of the most sophisticated computer operations in the country for tracking race results world-wide. Its database holds the names of more than 1.8 million horses in a master pedigree file which trace back to the late 1800′s.

According to the pedigree records, the overall foundation stock numbered only 80 horses, with 21 of those contributing a total 80% of the pedigree for modern Thoroughbred horses. Only 10 horses have contributed over 50% of the genes in the current generation of Thoroughbreds and four of those horses appear in the bloodlines of over 30% of modern Thoroughbreds. With such a small gene pool, genetic problems associated with inbreeding are generally expected. However, this does not appear to be the case in the Thoroughbred.

Now, as a result of three centuries of careful selection, Thoroughbred racehorses are the fastest horses in the world over distances of 1-1.75 miles. They have been bred to carry more than 1000 to 1300 pounds of their own body weight over extended distances, galloping at speeds of 35-40 miles per hour, yet still have the agility to respond to changes of pace or direction as dictated by the rider.

The gallop is the most natural gait for the Thoroughbred and the breed canters in a gallop called running. The feet move in a four-beat gait, and before the beat begins again, just for an instant, all four feet are off the ground and the horse is airborne for that single second before he begins the gait pattern again. Patience, training, and breeding can help instill pacing and trotting gaits, as well as other desirable motions.

Thoroughbreds are officially recognized in the colors of bay, black, chestnut, dark bay, dark brown, white, gray, roan, and palomino. The head should be proportional to the rest of the body, with a flat forehead and wide-set intelligent eyes. The head, which is carried relatively low, should sit well on a neck that is longer and lighter than in other breeds. The shoulder should be deep, well-muscled and sloped along the same parallel as that on which the head is carried. When seen from behind or from the front, the legs should be straight and move smoothly in unison through a single plane.

The Thoroughbred is one of the 5 “hot-blooded” horses in terms of temperament, which means they have more sensitivity and energy. But being high-strung gives the Thoroughbreds an edge that helps them compete successfully as race horses. Hot bloods have high intelligence that allows them to be athletic, versatile, and to learn quickly. They have agility and speed and are generally considered spirited and bold. They tend to have long legs and a slim build and are more physically refined than other breeds. Some pedigree lines of Thoroughbred are known to be temperamental, if not hot-headed, while others are equally known for their level-headedness.

All Thoroughbreds are given an official birthday of January 1st to keep the age groups easily defined for racing, regardless of the actual date of birth of the foal. They must be registered with the Jockey Club within a year of the actual birth date and must be DNA tested to prove their parentage. Additionally, a horse must be named by February of its 2-year-old year, but even that can be a challenge, since the owner must submit 6 names and it is the Jockey Club that will decide which name they can have.

In addition to DNA, “night-eyes”: or “chestnuts”, may be required for identification. These are horny, irregular growths that are found on the inside of a horse’s legs. They are just above the knees on the front legs and they are near the rear of the hock on the rear legs. These chestnuts are like human fingerprints since no two horses have been found to have the same set of these growths. Additionally, since they do not change in size or shape throughout the life of an adult horse they are extremely useful in animal identification. The Jockey Club often asks for a set of night-eye photos to assist in the identification of horses that have no white markings or for identifying gray/roans.

An expert on biomechanics of the horse once noted that if there is a limit on the Thoroughbred’s performance, it may be on the ability of the horse to remain sound in the face of the tremendous physical stresses of racing.
