BDR’s Sun Button Gets It Done Under Borel
Button Down Racing’s 3-Y-O colt, Sun Button, held off a stiff challenge coming out of the turn from post-time favorite Bonwell to win the fourth race on the Sunday Churchill Downs card. Sun Button was Calvin Borel’s first mount since winning the Preakness Stakes on Saturday aboard the filly Rachel Alexandra.
“It was quite a treat seeing “Bo” walk into the paddock to ride Sun Button and have the fans break into applause,” said Michael Hardesty, Button Down’s president. “He’s quite the celebrity now.”
Sun Button was in tight between horses after the break, but Borel gently took her back and to the rail, which has become his stock-in-trade. From there Sun Button took the lead which he never relinquished. Bonwell made a stout move on the turn but Borel picked him up and steadily urged his mount down the stretch where the Full Mandate colt drew off to a final margin of five lengths.
“This should give him some confidence,” said Borel.
Hardesty was unsure of the next move for Sun Button. “I’ll talk to Buff (trainer Bradley) early next week and see how the colt’s doing then decide what to do. I just hope Calvin sticks with us. I think ‘Sunny Boy’ likes him.”
Sun Button is now 2-1-2 in nine races.
