It took a few races and a trip to Indiana Downs, but Brunette- a three-year-old filly owned by Button Down Racing- scored her first win with a two-and-a-quarter-length victory over Red For The Cure at the Shelbyville track on Tuesday evening.

Brunette, a dark bay daughter of Lost Soldier, was ridden by Leandro Goncalves and raced behind a three-horse duel for much of the early going. But she launched a four-wide bid coming out of the turn, collared Red For The Cure, in the stretch and was lengthening her lead crossing the wire. Longshot Carleys Target finished third, five lengths behind Red For The Cure.

“We’re very happy to get the win,” said Michael Hardesty, president of Button Down Racing. “Our partners have been very patient, but it was time to get Brunette into the winners circle. This win will be a nice tonic for her owners and maybe a turning point for the filly. Buff (trainer William Bradley) has always maintained that she has some talent.”

Brunette will be run back in July at either Indiana Downs or Ellis Park. according to Hardesty.
