Button Down Racing’s ‘Dancer’ Makes It Two In A Row

Button DancerFour-year-old filly Button Dancer, ridden by John McKee, had enough left in the stretch to get through a timely hole and pull away to win the seventh race at Presque Isle Downs on Thursday, Aug. 27. In her last outing, she had captured a maiden race at Ellis Park by eight lengths.

Breaking from the one-hole, Button Dancer was in tight down the backstretch and boxed in on the rail. But McKee kept his mount steady through the traffic, and when they came out of the turn, he took Button Dancer three-wide just in time to see that lane open up nicely. He had enough horse left to get through and run down long shot Tocherishn’protect. The final margin was an increasing two-and-one-half lengths and the time was a quick 1:09-4/5.

“I just did what Billy (trainer William Connelly) told me to,” said McKee. “He said not to rush her so I didn’t. I just followed instructions and it worked out well.”

“It was great to have John back on one of our horses,” said Michael Hardesty, president of owning partnership Button Down Racing. “I thought he was patient and that he executed perfectly. His fortunes are on the uptick at Presque Isle and he’s a really nice young fellow.”

The Florida-bred daughter of Runaway Dancer paid $12.40, $6.00 and $3.20 to her backers. Hardesty said that Button Dancer would probably get her next start in September at Turfway Park.
