Button Down Racing’s Sun Button Third at Turfway
Sun Button, a 2-Y-O son of Full Mandate, came up on the short end of a three-way photo for the win in the ninth race at Turfway Park on Saturday, Dec.13. Jockey Bill Troilo had coaxed Sun Button to the lead coming out of the final turn in the mile maiden race at the Florence, Kentucky track.
But that’s when things got a little interesting. “He decided he wanted to take a look at the grandstand,” said Troilo. “That let a couple of them go by us and when he got down to business again, we were gaining, but it was too late. We should have won the race.”
My Friend Ken had a head in front of Joe Medley’s 52-1 shot, Ridge City, at the wire. Sun Button, trained by William “Buff” Bradley went off the 2-1 favorite and the show was his second third-place finish in three starts. He was unplaced in his other race.
Bradley said the BDR colt “cooled out really well. He never coughed once and acted as though he hadn’t done anything.”
Michael Hardesty, president and racing manager of Button Down Racing, said he wanted to wait a couple of days and speak with his trainer before deciding on Sun Button’s next race.
“I was encouraged in that our colt was running well at the end in spite of his little antic at the top of the stretch. I’m confident that Buff and Billy can teach him what to do- or better still- what not to do,” Hardesty said.
