    @Beatlegirl4eva Very true.

    @BackstretchUnderdog Ruffian was untested against males. But as far as males racing males and females racing females goes, she was the best. Now if you wanna go on about if they had competed, anything could happen becauseits males vs. females. I think for their sexes, they had equal competition.

    @Beatlegirl4eva You can’t just make statements like that. Secretariat and Man o’War had FAR tougher competition. They also had longer, harsher races.

    @Starbuc1 -

    Actually she didn’t break the same leg it was already broken, she broke her other fore leg and was put to sleep due to the fact she wouldn’t be able to survive another surgery.

    @patty0130 Zenyatta was not retired. They brought her back, and she has won both starts since returning to racing. She won the Apple Blossom this month, and the Santa Margarita last month. She almost lost the Margarita, but was able to find a seam through the inside and won. Rachel Alexandra was not undefeated. She was only undefeated last year. She lost her 2010 debut to Zenyatta’s stablemate, Zardana, in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes.

    I wasn’t born to see Ruffian break down..but in 2006 when Ruffian’s “reincarnation” Pine Island broke down in the Breeders Cup Distaff, i was horrified…she reminded me EXACTLY of Ruffian..they even looked like spitting images of each other

    Eclipse was. :) 18 for 18 and going away.
    He almost always finished with the rest of the horses “nowhere” or 240 yards behind him. The Eclipse awards are named after him, and around 95% of thoroughbreds are his decendants.
    I love researching horse racing. xD

    no one can be better than secretariat!

  9. brewerschick08 on May 27th, 2010 at 9:47 am

    she was absolutely gorgeous, RIP Ruffian

  10. Beatlegirl4eva on May 27th, 2010 at 9:53 am

    She was great, better than Secretariat and possibly Man O War. Rachel Alexandra reminds me of Ruffian a lot, both beautiful, perfect, and both making history numerous times.
    She broke down, but she saved the lives of millions through her death.
    I hope people have learned from her breeding as well, she came from a fast but fragile line, a lot of her ancestors and relatives on both sides had 1 or more breakdowns and some of them euthanized because of it.

    As sad as Ruffian’s end – please don’t let two other great mares pass you by. Zenyatta just retired – 14 wins out of 14 races and her last race was the Breeders Cup Classic it was remarkable and in the end she kicked dirt into the colts’ faces…watch it on youtube. Also Rachel Alexandra, undefeated and winning the Preakness! I would have loved to see these two great mares in a match race.

  12. patty0130 on May 27th, 2010 at 10:47 am

    I clearly remember that match race. Ruffian was a nose ahead of Foolish Pleasure when she broke down. The two were going unbelievably fast but I think she would have breezed by him because he was not as good as she was. She broke the Sesimoid bones which are just above the hoof. Her leg was not dangling and her jockey got off immediately and tried to hold the leg off the ground. She was in great pain. Everyone was in tears after hearing that she had to be put down.

    Thanks to everybody of you,who made a tribute in memory of Ruffian!
    I’m from Italy and from so far I loved her, I cried for her death and now again she is in my heart for the charm of her beauty and her greatness : Beloved and unforgettable gentle Ruffian!

  15. brewerschick08 on May 27th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

    Yea, and when that guy in the movie said “What face her up against a bit of talent and she cracks?” I wanted to punch that guys character so much!

  16. Starbuc1 on May 27th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

    She woke up after surgery, thinking she was still running. (No pool like Barbaro was in, that was not developed for another 25 yrs.)She re-broke the same spot and shattered the cast. She also broke her elbow as well. Knowing she would most likely not live thru another surgery to fix two breaks and another wake-up, they put her down. It broke my heart but was the best for her. Her accident & surgery really forced vet. medicine to advance and because of her many other horses have been saved. RIP.

  17. Starbuc1 on May 27th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

    Agree, ever trainer of the time felt Ruffian was something beyond a race horse. That she was in deed “burning from the start.” Perhaps, she burnt to hot, to fast to ever last for long. No trainer wanted to run against her with any horse, not even Secretariat. His trainer did say he thought Ruffian was the greatest horse of all-time. What a compliment that was. I love her, always will. IMO, she was the greatest that ever raced, no other is even close. Nice comments, great to see.

    deana545, These are clips from the movie..

  21. HorseyIndyJones on May 27th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

    Goldsum, because horse’s legs aren’t really designed to recover from breaks. If a young foal breaks something, it has a better chance of recovery. I know Ruffian was a filly when she broke down but she was racing and her leg was pretty much dangling, or so that’s what I see in the actual video of her breaking down. Anyway, horses don’t stand on three legs, they’re not not like dogs who can go with out one or two legs. See what I mean?

  22. bigspaz3 on May 27th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    Ugh, such a tragedy… I wasn’t alive yet but I cried so hard during the movie. One of the worst racing accidents ever. Great video.

  23. BreyerLottie on May 27th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

  24. brewerschick08 on May 27th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
