Two Karakorum Runners at Belmont Park

Digger Karakorum, closed valiantly for second place on Mothers Day. After spotting the leaders four and-a-half lengths, Kent Desormeaux took Digger four wide to make a stretch run. In the stretch, Digger Karakorum suffered a soft-tissue injury, preventing him from passing City Sneakers. He only lost by a head, after which Kent pulled him up as soon as possible. He walked onto the horse ambulance and walked okay the morning after the race.

A day earlier (05/09/2009) Sergeant Karakorum, despite getting retrained in the gate, was slow after the break and gave the field a substantial head start. Sebastian Morales kept him to the inside on the turn and ran up the rail to pass all but the top two finishers in the $50,000 maiden claiming sprint. His ability to sustain his run suggests a successful future, possibly in longer races.
